Kassandra, Greece

3 days / 2 nights · Beaches, villages, archaeology, local cuisine
This itinerary crosses Kassandra by area, limiting repeated travel: the first day is dedicated to Kallithea and Afitos, the second to the eastern coast between Pefkochori, Hanioti and Glarokavos, and the third to the southwestern side between Possidi, Nea Skioni and Loutra. A central base, for example between Kallithea and Afitos, makes getting around easier, but for the more secluded beaches a car is definitely useful. The days alternate between sea, short visits and food stops, with schedules to be adjusted for the season and the heat. In high season, it is advisable to leave early and check museum and spa opening hours in advance.
Day 1 · Walking · 7.8 km · 93 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Discover the ancient heritage of Kallithea and end the day in the stone-built village of Afitos.
09:30
Temple of Ammon Zeus
Reach the archaeological site on foot from the center of Kallithea and spend about 45–60 minutes among the remains of the sanctuary, set in a green area overlooking the sea. Access may be subject to opening hours and an admission fee, typically around 5–10 €; check updated information before your visit.
In summer, it is best to arrive in the morning, when the site is less exposed to the heat.
10:45
Swimming at Kallithea Beach
Head down to the beach for your first stop of about two hours: the water is clear and the shoreline is equipped in the summer months. An umbrella and sunbeds may cost around 15–30 € per set, while beach access is generally free.
Bring water shoes and water: crowds increase significantly in high season.
13:00
Lunch in Kallithea
Stop at a taverna in the center, easily reached by car or with a short walk from the beach. Plan on about 15–30 € per person for a simple meal with a main course and a drink, depending on the venue and the season.
Ask about the daily specials and check whether the cover charge or bread is billed separately.
15:00
Folklore Museum of Afitos
Reach Afitos in about 15 minutes by car and visit the small museum to learn about local objects, costumes, and traditions. The visit usually takes 30–45 minutes; expect an admission fee of around 2–5 € and check opening times, which may vary out of season.
If the museum is closed, use the time to explore the village’s narrow streets at a relaxed pace.
16:00
Walk through the village of Afitos
Spend about an hour in the historic center, among stone houses, narrow lanes, and views over the Toroneos Gulf. The village is easy to explore on foot and does not require a ticket; allow for a few breaks in the little squares and panoramic spots.
The streets are partly paved: comfortable shoes are more practical than beach sandals.
17:30
Descent and stop at Afitos Beach
Head down to the beach for a swim or an hour of relaxation; the route from the village is short but steep, and the return involves a bit of uphill walking. Access is generally free, while any sunbeds and refreshments have varying prices.
For the trip back after sunset, keep the climb in mind and bring a light or use the better-lit road.
20:00
Dinner on the seafront in Afitos
End the day with a dinner of fish, meze, or Greek dishes in a village taverna, allowing about 1–1,5 hours. A full meal can cost roughly 20–40 € per person, depending on the menu and drinks.
In July and August, booking ahead is useful, especially for tables with a view.
Alternate the lively beaches of the eastern coast with a more relaxed stop at Glarokavos.
09:00
Morning at Pefkochori Beach
Set off from your central base and drive to Pefkochori; from Kallithea, the journey can take about 35–45 minutes, depending on traffic. Spend a couple of hours at the beach and on the seafront promenade; access is generally free, with paid sunbeds in the equipped sections.
Park in the designated areas on the edge of town: finding a spot close to the shore can be difficult.
11:30
Walk through the center of Pefkochori
Head back toward the village for a short stroll among shops, cafés, and the narrow streets of the center. Allow 45–60 minutes and take the chance to buy water or something to bring to the beach; expenses depend on what you order.
During the middle of the day the seafront is busy: go on foot and leave the car parked.
12:30
Swimming break at Hanioti Beach
Drive about 10–15 minutes to Hanioti and spend the longest break of the day here. The beach is close to the center and in summer offers facilities and snack bars; budget about 15–30 € for sunbeds and an umbrella, if available for a fee.
If the sea is rough, check local conditions before going into the water.
14:30
Lunch in Hanioti
Have lunch in a taverna or a casual place in the center, just a few minutes’ walk from the beach. A simple meal costs roughly 15–30 € per person; allow about an hour for a relaxed meal.
Alternatively, bring a snack and extend your beach stop.
16:00
Afternoon at Glarokavos Beach
Reach Glarokavos in about 15–20 minutes by car from Hanioti, following local signs and checking the condition of the access road. The area is appreciated for its coastal scenery and lagoon; spend two hours here swimming and walking, without expecting the same services as in larger resorts.
Bring water, sunscreen, and cash: services and availability can vary by season.
18:30
Return and break in Pefkochori
Head back toward Pefkochori, allowing about 20 minutes for the drive and extra time during busy periods. An evening stroll along the seafront is an easy way to end the day before dinner.
If you are staying elsewhere on the peninsula, factor in additional driving time for the return.
19:30
Dinner in Pefkochori
Choose a taverna in the center or along the seafront and try fish dishes, salads, and Greek specialties. Expect roughly €20–40 per person for dinner; prices go up at venues with a prime location.
To avoid waiting, have dinner a little earlier than peak time or book ahead in the summer months.
Explore the Possidi peninsula, stop in the coastal village of Nea Skioni, and relax at the Loutra thermal baths.
09:00
Departure for Possidi Cape
Reach Possidi by car, allowing roughly 30–45 minutes from a central base and checking traffic conditions. The cape is an open natural area, with beaches and sweeping sea views; there is no admission fee.
Wear shoes suitable for sand and do not go near the exposed stretches if the sea is rough.
10:00
Walk and swim at Possidi Cape
Set aside about two hours for a walk along the shoreline and a swim, choosing a safe spot and following local guidance. Bringing a beach umbrella, water, and sunscreen is important because natural shade may be limited; any beach services are seasonal and subject to a fee.
The shape of the sand spit can change with the wind and sea: avoid crossing stretches with strong currents or waves.
12:15
Lunch in the Possidi area
Stop at a taverna in the village or at a place near the coast, allowing about an hour for lunch. A full meal can cost roughly €15–30 per person, depending on the dishes and drinks.
At busier times it is wise to call ahead, especially for seaside restaurants.
14:00
Stop at Nea Skioni Beach
Drive to Nea Skioni, usually about 25–35 minutes from Possidi, and stop for a swim or a stroll along the seafront. The beach is close to the village and offers a quieter break; access is normally free, while facilities may be seasonal.
Check where you park and do not leave valuables visible in the car.
15:30
Walk and coffee break in Nea Skioni
Explore the small center and the harbor, treating yourself to a coffee or a soft drink before setting off again. The stop takes about an hour and only involves the cost of what you order, typically 3–8 € per person.
It’s a good break during the hottest hours, before driving to Loutra.
16:45
Loutra Agias Paraskevis Thermal Baths
Reach the thermal complex in Loutra in about 15–20 minutes by car and set aside at least 90 minutes for the visit and a bath, if the facility is open. Admission may vary, but expect roughly 8–15 € per person; opening hours, pool availability and prices should be checked on site or before departure.
Bring a swimsuit, flip-flops and a towel; don’t plan the stop without checking seasonal opening times.
19:00
Dinner and return
Wrap up with a simple dinner in Loutra or along the route back to base, factoring in driving times. Budget around 20–40 € per person for a full meal and check in advance whether your chosen restaurant requires a reservation.
After sunset, drive carefully: some roads on the peninsula are narrow and poorly lit.
