BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

The city center and the main neighborhoods are easy to explore on foot, though the distances can be considerable. The Mi Tren network includes light rail lines and a bus rapid transit line, useful for getting between different parts of the city; check updated routes and schedules before you go. City buses cover many other areas, but they can be crowded and may take a bit of getting used to. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are convenient, especially in the evening or when you have luggage. From the airport, which is also reachable by bus, a licensed taxi or a pre-booked car may be the most practical options.

When to go

The months from November to April are generally the driest and most pleasant for visiting Guadalajara. From June to September, rain is frequent, often concentrated in the afternoon, so it’s a good idea to bring a light umbrella and plan outdoor activities for the morning. Temperatures are mild for much of the year, but the altitude brings cooler evenings: an extra layer can come in handy.

Where to eat

To sample local cuisine, look for a torta ahogada, a meat-filled sandwich soaked in sauce, or birria, often served with tortillas and broth. Markets and fondas offer home-style dishes at affordable prices; Mercado Libertad, also known as San Juan de Dios, is a lively stop for eating and browsing. In the Chapultepec and Providencia neighborhoods, you’ll also find restaurants and cafés with a wider range of options. In busy places, choose stalls with a good turnover of customers and bottled water if you’d rather avoid tap water.

Quick tips

  1. Keep small bills handy for markets, food stalls, and local transportation.
  2. Check your route in advance: traffic can be heavy, especially during rush hour.
  3. At night, use licensed taxis or a ride-hailing app, and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas.
  4. Bring sunscreen and a light jacket; during the rainy season, add a compact umbrella.
