Day 1 – From the panorama of the Schloßberg to art on the Mur

09:00–20:30 Moderate walks, with breaks

Discover Graz’s main contrasts, from the historic city seen from above to its Renaissance and contemporary buildings.

09:00

Schloßberg and the Clock Tower

Set aside about 2 hours for the Schloßberg: reach the summit on foot via the paths and stairways, or consider the funicular or the lift, checking the official website for prices and accessibility. At the Clock Tower, take in the dial, with its unusually arranged hands, and stroll along the viewpoints to get your bearings among rooftops, church towers, and the Mur River. The paths can be steep and cobbled; allow an approximate cost of 0–8 EUR for going up or down by lift or funicular, depending on the option you choose.

Comfortable shoes and a light jacket are useful: it can be windier on the hill than in the city center.

11:45

Hauptplatz and Town Hall

Head down toward the historic center and reach Hauptplatz in about 10–20 minutes on foot, depending on the route you choose. Allow 45–60 minutes for the square, taking in the historic façades, the Town Hall, and the flow of the shopping streets that converge here. For a coffee break or snack nearby, allow roughly 4–12 EUR per person.

The square is a good place to get your bearings before continuing on foot to Herrengasse.

13:00

Landhaus (Renaissance courtyard)

Reach the Landhaus on foot in just a few minutes, following Herrengasse. In the Renaissance courtyard, spend about 30–45 minutes admiring the loggias, arches, and architectural details; access and any restrictions may vary, so check official information before your visit. You can stop for lunch in the area: a simple meal can cost roughly 12–25 EUR per person.

Keep your voice down in the courtyard, as it belongs to an institutional complex.

15:00

Kunsthaus Graz (The Friendly Alien)

From the Landhaus, walk about 10–15 minutes toward the Mur and the Kunsthaus, known for its organic shape and bluish cladding. Spend 1–2 hours on the exhibitions if you want to visit them, and also take in the building from the outside and the contrast with the surrounding historic fabric; check the official website for exhibitions, opening times, and tickets, as these may vary. For admission to the exhibitions, allow roughly 10–18 EUR; afterward, you can head back toward the center for dinner, budgeting about 18–35 EUR per person.

The exterior visit is a good alternative if you'd rather skip a museum ticket; leave time to cross the Mur at a leisurely pace.

Practical tips

  • Check the official websites of the Kunsthaus and the Schloßberg lifts for opening hours, prices, and any changes before planning your day.
  • Wear shoes with good grip: the Schloßberg paths include steep sections and uneven paving.
  • Bring a payment card and a small amount of cash for minor expenses; check in advance the payment methods accepted by individual businesses.
  • If it rains, reduce your time on the scenic trails and focus on indoor stops, checking availability and access in advance.
