How to get around
Graz’s old town is easy to explore on foot, but trams and buses connect the neighborhoods and the main attractions. Buy your ticket before boarding or through the official public transport channels, and check the latest fares. For short trips, you can also use a bicycle, thanks to the bike lanes and rental services. To reach the Schlossberg, you can walk up or take the funicular or the elevator, for a fee. From the airport, trains and buses connect the city: check schedules and connections based on your arrival time.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for strolling through the center and enjoying the parks in mild temperatures. Summer brings long days and plenty of outdoor events, but it can be hot and crowded. In winter, the center comes alive with Christmas markets and light installations, while the weather can be cold. If you travel during festivals or events, book in advance and check the local calendar.
Where to eat
To sample Styrian cuisine, look for dishes with pumpkin seed oil, Käferbohnen beans, and Backhendl, the region’s typical breaded chicken. In the old town you’ll find traditional restaurants, cafés, and contemporary venues; markets such as the one at Kaiser-Josef-Platz are a good choice for local products and snacks. In season, also try pumpkin-based dishes and specialties paired with Styrian wines. For a weekend dinner, it’s advisable to book ahead.
