Day 1 – Gortyna, Minoan civilization and the coast of Matala

08:00–19:30 Cultural visits and car transfers

Explore the main historical sites of Messara and end the day with a stop by the sea in Matala.

08:00

Departure from Heraklion and transfer to Gortyna

Reach Gortyna by car, heading south through the Messara plain: the drive usually takes around 50–60 minutes, depending on traffic and your starting point. A car is the most practical way to connect the day’s sites; budget fuel for the full route.

Set off with water and a hat: shade can be limited inside the archaeological sites.

09:00

Visit to the archaeological site of Gortyna

Spend about an hour and a half in the archaeological area, a vast complex that documents several phases of Cretan and Roman history. Take in the remains of public and religious buildings as well as traces of the ancient city, keeping in mind that the ruins are spread across an open area. Approximate admission: around 4–8 € per person, to be checked according to the season and current rates.

Follow the permitted paths and check at the ticket office which sections are accessible that day.

10:30

Odeon and inscription of the Gortyn Code

Inside the Gortyna site, make your way to the Odeon, a small Roman building that preserves part of the famous legal inscription known as the Gortyn Code. Spend about 30–40 minutes among the remains and information panels, which help explain the importance of the city’s laws and administration. The Odeon is visited as part of the same archaeological stop, without considering it a separate admission.

Bring a guidebook or download a map in advance: on-site explanations can be essential.

11:20

Transfer and visit to Agia Triada

Drive to Agia Triada, about 25–35 minutes from Gortyna. Spend 45–60 minutes among the remains of the Minoan complex, taking in the layout of the buildings and the site’s relationship with the surrounding countryside. Allow for an indicative entrance fee of around €3–8 per person, or check whether combined tickets with other sites are available.

Opening hours may be shorter than at the major sites: check before planning your visit.

12:30

Minoan Palace of Phaistos

Reach the archaeological site of Phaistos in about 10–15 minutes and set aside 75–90 minutes for the visit. The palace stands on a scenic hilltop: explore the courtyards, stairways, and remains of the ceremonial rooms, pausing to take in the view over the Messara Plain. Indicative ticket price: around €8–15 per person, with the final amount and terms subject to change.

The surfaces are uneven and partly exposed to the sun; closed-toe shoes and sun protection are recommended.

14:00

Lunch in Moires

Reach Moires in about 10–15 minutes for a one-hour break at a taverna or a place in the town center. You can opt for simple Cretan dishes, salads, seasonal vegetables, and grilled specialties; expect to spend around €15–25 per person for a meal, drinks excluded or included depending on the venue.

In peak season, it can be useful to stop for lunch before the busiest hours.

15:30

Afternoon at Matala Beach

From Moires, reach Matala in about 25–35 minutes. Allow a couple of hours to stroll along the seafront and relax on the beach, or swim if sea conditions are favorable; beach access is generally free, while sun loungers and umbrellas may cost around €10–20 per pair. Consider visiting the caves on the promontory only if they are accessible and compatible with local opening times.

The beach is pebbly and the sea can be rough: bring water shoes and check conditions before swimming.

18:00

Return to Heraklion

Depart Matala for Heraklion: the drive usually takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, but it can be longer due to traffic or roadworks. Refuel if needed and plan only a short stop in a safe area. Arrival is expected around 19:30.

If you are not driving, check bus schedules in advance: connections and transfers can make it difficult to complete all the stops in one day.

Practical tips

  • Check opening hours, closing days, and entrance fees for the archaeological sites shortly before your visit, especially outside the high season.
  • Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen: Gortyna, Agia Triada, and Phaistos have exposed stretches and little shade.
  • Wear comfortable shoes with good grip for walking on stone, steps, and uneven ground.
  • By public transport, the route is less flexible: check schedules and connections in advance or consider an organized excursion.
