Carved into stone blocks in the Odeon area, it is one of the most important and best-preserved legal texts from ancient Greece. The inscriptions date back to the 5th century BC.
The imposing ruins of this early Christian basilica recall Gortyna’s role as the island’s religious center. The church is traditionally linked to Saint Titus, the first bishop of Crete.
Among the main places of worship in the ancient city, the temple was dedicated to Apollo and remained in use for centuries. Its remains are found in the northern archaeological sector.

Gortyna is located in the Messara plain, near the village of Agioi Deka, along the road that connects Heraklion to Mires. A car is the most convenient way to get there: it makes it easy to reach the site and combine the visit with other stops in the area. From Heraklion, you can also consider the direct bus to Mires, getting off near Gortyna, but routes and stops may vary: check the latest schedules before you leave. Once there, the archaeological area is explored on foot. Be careful with traffic, as parts of the site are close to the road.
Spring and autumn are the most pleasant times to explore the site, with generally milder temperatures and ideal light for photos. In summer, the heat can be intense and shade is scarce, so it’s best to arrive in the morning. Check opening hours and any seasonal changes before your visit.
For a meal after your visit, look for tavernas and cafés in Agioi Deka or nearby towns such as Mires; Zaros can also be an interesting stop if you’re exploring the area. Options and opening hours can change, especially outside the high season, so it’s worth checking in advance. Bring water and a snack with you: refreshment facilities at the site may be limited.
