Guide to Gavdos
GAVDOS · ITINERARY

Gavdos (Chania, Crete, Greece) in 3 days – Complete itinerary

3 days / 2 nights · Beaches, nature, hikes, villages

The itinerary follows a progressive route from Karave port to the northern beaches, then dedicates the following days to the island’s more remote landscapes and the south of the island. The division by area limits, as much as possible, repeated transfers on roads that are often unpaved and requires checking local conditions for connections. Gavdos is small, but travel times can be long: it’s best to choose between local transport and carefully planned walks, avoiding reliance on unconfirmed connections. The schedule is indicative and should be adjusted to the actual ferry times, the season, and the weather.

Day 1 – From the port to the northern beaches

10:00–20:00 Easy walks and beach stops

Getting to know the island and reaching the northern beaches without adding long detours.

10:00

Karave Port

Start in Karave, the arrival point for sea connections, and get your bearings before heading inland. Set aside about 45 minutes to organize water, supplies, and transport: local runs and transfers can be limited and variable. Allow roughly €0–5 for a short break and check the travel options directly on site.

Adjust the entire day to the actual ferry schedule; do not rely on unconfirmed connections.

12:00

Sarakiniko Beach

Reach Sarakiniko in about 15–30 minutes by local transport or a vehicle, taking road conditions into account; on foot, the trip can take considerably longer. Plan around two hours for the beach and a walk along the shore, bringing water and sun protection. Beach access is generally free; budget about €0–15 for the transfer, depending on the vehicle and arrangement.

Check transport availability on site and do not assume beach services will be available.

16:00

Agios Ioannis

Continue on to Agios Ioannis, one of the island's best-known beaches, allowing roughly 20–40 minutes for the transfer from the Sarakiniko area on local roads. Spend two or three hours on the shore and in the late-afternoon light, without straying far from recognizable paths. Beach access usually does not require a ticket; allow about €0–20 for transport and bring water for the return trip.

Before setting off, agree on the return: the distance and road surface make improvising at the end of the day unwise.

Day 2 – The northern coast and the historic lighthouse

09:00–18:30 Moderate hike and scenic visit

Exploring the more remote northern coast and reaching the lighthouse with plenty of time to walk and return safely.

09:00

Lavrakas Beach

Leave early for Lavrakas, allowing about 30–60 minutes from Agios Ioannis depending on your starting point, your transport, and trail conditions. Set aside at least two hours for the beach and coastal scenery; some sections may require continuing on foot. Access is free, while the transfer may cost roughly €0–25: confirm the price and pickup point in advance.

Bring water, a hat, and suitable footwear: do not count on services or supplies being available.

14:30

Old Lighthouse of Gavdos

Head back toward the lighthouse area, allowing roughly 45–75 minutes from Lavrakas between walking and transfer, depending on the route chosen. Spend about an hour visiting the exterior and enjoying the views, respecting any access instructions: the possibility of entering the interior spaces and any visiting arrangements should be checked on the official website or locally. Expect an approximate cost of €0–10 for any access and €0–25 for transport.

Do not plan to return after dark: check the route, trail conditions, and return options in advance.

Day 3 – The southern villages and the Tripiti promontory

09:00–19:00 An active day with transfers and walking

Discover the southern interior, reach Tripiti, and end in Kastri in time for the return journey.

09:00

Vatsiana

Head to Vatsiana, in the south of the island, and allow about an hour to take in the small village and the surrounding landscape. From Karave, the transfer can take roughly 30–60 minutes, depending on the vehicle and road conditions; check that the route is passable before setting off. There is no ticket required to stroll through the village; budget around €0–30 for transport and bring water and supplies with you.

Ask locals about road conditions and whether a ride back might be available.

12:30

Tripiti Beach

From Vatsiana, continue to Tripiti, allowing around 20–40 minutes for the transfer and extra time for any walking section. Spend at least two hours by the coast and on the promontory, the island’s geographic landmark, and avoid exposed stretches if you do not feel confident. The beach is accessible without a ticket; allow roughly €0–25 for transport and bring enough water for the round trip.

Take heat, wind, and trail conditions seriously: do not rely on a short estimate for walking times.

17:00

Kastri

Finish in Kastri, allowing around 30–60 minutes to get there from Tripiti depending on the route and transport. Set aside about an hour to wander the village center and take a break before heading back to Karave, which may take a further 20–40 minutes. Visiting the village usually does not involve an entrance fee; budget around €0–30 for transfers and check the connection to the port in advance.

If the ferry leaves early the next day, arrange your overnight stay and transfer to the port before heading south.

Practical tips

  • Check ferry timetables and service status before setting your dates: frequencies and connections can vary depending on the season and sea conditions.
  • Bring water, sun protection, walking shoes, and a small supply of provisions; services can be limited on the more remote beaches.
  • Ask for up-to-date information on dirt roads, trails, and local transport, and agree in advance on the meeting point and return time.
  • For visits, any tickets, and access to the lighthouse, check the official website or verify on site: availability and arrangements may change.
