7 days / 6 nights · Villages, trekking, waterfalls, beaches
The first part of the trip is devoted to Karlovasi and the northern coast, with one day for the Potami waterfalls and a hike to Mikro Seitani beach. Then continue inland through mountain villages and on to Marathokampos, where Pythagoras Cave and the beaches of the southwest alternate. The final day crosses the far west of the island: an area of winding roads, sweeping views, and stops that should be planned with some flexibility. A car is recommended for the entire itinerary; the costs indicated are approximate and outdoor visits depend on the weather.

Get acquainted with Karlovasi and visit its historic center at a leisurely pace.
10:00
Arrival and check-in in Karlovasi
Spend the morning checking in and taking a first stroll through the center. If you arrive by plane, the transfer by car from the airport can take about 1 hour and 15 minutes, depending on traffic and the road; a rental car is also useful for the following days.
Before you set off, check the ferry or flight times and the rental conditions.
12:00
Walk through central Karlovasi
Explore the commercial center and the streets around the port, taking in the neoclassical architecture and the feel of a manufacturing town. A self-guided walk is free; allow about 1–1.5 hours.
For a simple lunch break, budget around €12–20 per person.
14:30
Old Karlovasi
Head up to the oldest part of town to wander among narrow lanes, small squares, and traditional houses. The route is uphill and over uneven ground: allow about 1 hour and wear comfortable shoes.
External visits are free; a drink in a café can cost around €3–6.
16:30
Samos Tannery Museum
If it’s open, spend some time on the history of leatherworking and the city’s industrial past. Opening hours may be reduced or seasonal, so check locally before going; allow around 45–60 minutes and an approximate admission of €2–5.
If the museum is closed, use the time for a walk through the old tannery district.
19:00
Dinner and early evening
Head back toward the center or the harbor for a dinner of local cuisine. For a meal with a main course and a drink, budget around €18–30 per person; overnight in Karlovasi.
In high season, it’s wise to book ahead, especially on weekends.
Alternate beach and waterfalls with a coastal hike, adjusting the route to the sea conditions and the trail.
08:30
Departure for Potami Beach
Reach Potami by car in about 10–15 minutes from Karlovasi and leave the vehicle in the available areas near the beach. The beach is pebbly and access is generally free; bring water, a hat, and suitable shoes for walking too.
In peak summer, it’s a good idea to arrive early for parking.
09:00
Swimming and a walk at Potami Beach
Spend the morning by the sea and on a walk along the bay, often exposed to the wind and with deep water in some places. The stop time is flexible; umbrellas and sunbeds, when available, can cost about €10–25 for two people.
The availability of services varies throughout the season.
11:00
Potami Waterfalls Trail
Follow the path to the waterfalls through vegetation and rocky sections; some stretches may require wading through water or using a small local boat, depending on the stream level. Allow 1.5–2.5 hours in total; any boat services may cost around €5–10.
Do not tackle wet sections with smooth sandals, and turn back if the water level is high.
14:00
Lunch and a break in the shade
Head back toward the main road or a local taverna for lunch. A casual meal can cost around €12–22 per person; plan for a break before any coastal walk.
Bring enough water with you: services are limited along the trail.
15:30
Walk to Mikro Seitani Beach
Reach Mikro Seitani along the coastal trail from Potami, keeping in mind this is a demanding hike because of the heat, uneven ground, and exposed sections; check conditions and timings on site before setting off. The beach is secluded and has no facilities: allow at least 2–3 hours for the round trip, including time on the beach, or opt for a shorter section only.
It’s best to set off early; don’t rely on getting back after dark, and bring water, snacks, and sunscreen.
Discover the farming villages and roads of the northern interior with short scenic stops.
09:30
Departure from Karlovasi
Have breakfast and fill up the car before leaving the coast; the distances are short, but the side roads can be narrow and winding. Set aside about €5–10 for breakfast and coffee.
Set the stops before you leave: phone coverage can be patchy in some valleys.
10:15
Leka
Stroll through the small center and take in the village layout on the slopes, with views toward the coast. A walking visit takes about 45–60 minutes and is free.
Park without blocking the village’s narrow streets.
12:00
Kontakeika
Stop for a short exploration among the houses, church, and little square, then enjoy the surrounding rural scenery. This is not an organized museum visit: allow about 45 minutes and no entrance fee.
Respect the village’s quiet atmosphere, especially during the middle of the day.
14:00
Lunch and stop in Ydroussa
Head to Ydroussa and enjoy a relaxed lunch in a taverna, if open, or a snack you brought with you. Budget about €15–25 per person for a meal; after lunch, take a walk of about 45 minutes through the streets.
The availability of places to eat can change in the low season: have a backup option.
17:00
Scenic return to Karlovasi
Head back toward Karlovasi with photo stops only where it’s safe to pull over. The return is short, but avoid rushing on the bends; the evening is free for dinner, around €18–30 per person.
If you still have energy, an evening walk in the center doesn’t require any extra travel.
Cross the mountainous interior of Samos, stopping in three villages without turning the day into a strenuous hike.
09:00
Departure and supplies
Leave Karlovasi with water, snacks, and a full enough tank: the route follows mountain roads and travel times depend on the bends. A simple breakfast costs about €5–10 per person.
For this day, it’s best to drive in full daylight.
10:00
Platanos
Explore the village on foot and look for a quiet spot to take in the terraces and the surrounding hills. Allow about 1 hour; wandering around the center is free.
The streets can be steep: shoes with good grip are useful.
12:00
Kosmadei
Continue to Kosmadei, a mountain village with a calm pace, and take time for a short walk among the houses and viewpoints. Allow 45–60 minutes and no entrance fee.
Do not park on narrow stretches: use the designated spaces at the entrance to the village.
14:00
Lunch and a stop in Kallithea
Head to Kallithea for lunch and a stroll through the village; check in advance which tavernas are open, especially outside summer. A meal can cost around €15–25 per person.
If you can’t find an open place, have a picnic bought in Karlovasi.
17:00
Return with scenic stops
Head back to the coast at a leisurely pace, using safe pull-offs for photos and keeping the road clear. Driving can take longer than the distance suggests; budget fuel of about €10–20 depending on the car and route.
Check the fuel level before leaving the main roads.
Move to the southwestern coast and get to know the mountain landscape tied to the tradition of Pythagoras.
09:00
Transfer to Marathokampos
Leave Karlovasi and reach Marathokampos in about 40–55 minutes by car, depending on traffic and your chosen accommodation. If you change base, allow extra time for check-in and an estimated fuel cost of €8–15.
Keep water and essential luggage with you if the room is not ready yet.
10:30
Walk around Marathokampos
Explore the historic center, with its narrow lanes, traditional houses and views of the hills. Set aside about 1–1.5 hours for the visit, free of charge; the ground is sloping and comfortable shoes are recommended.
A coffee stop may cost around €3–6.
12:30
Lunch in the village
Stop for a meal before heading to the cave trails. Budget roughly €15–25 per person and ask on site for updated information about access.
Avoid tackling the climb right after a heavy lunch during the hottest hours.
14:30
Cave of Pythagoras
Head to the cave area and prepare for a steep ascent, with steps and uneven ground: it is best to assess your fitness before starting. The visit may take 1.5–2.5 hours including the outward walk, stop and return; access, if available, may be free or subject to local conditions.
Bring water, hiking shoes and a flashlight; check accessibility before setting off.
18:00
Stop at Votsalakia Beach
End the day with a walk along the Votsalakia waterfront or a swim, if the sea is calm. Access to the beach is generally free; an umbrella with sunbeds can cost around €10–25.
After the climb, choose a comfortable stretch of beach and don’t force yourself back into the water if you’re tired.
Enjoy the coast around Ormos Marathokampou by alternating a stroll in the harbor with two swim stops.
09:00
Breakfast and preparation
Have breakfast in the Marathokampos or Votsalakia area and pack water, sunscreen, and a dry change of clothes. Budget around €5–10 per person; the day’s transfers are short, but the bays have variable facilities.
Bring cash for small purchases in places where electronic payment is not always available.
10:00
Ormos Marathokampou
Stroll around the harbor and along the seafront, watching the boats and village everyday life. A relaxed visit takes about 1 hour and is free.
It’s a good area to buy water and snacks before heading to the beaches.
11:30
Balos Beach
Drive to the beach and choose a sheltered stretch for swimming or relaxing. Access is generally free; facilities and sunbeds may be seasonal, with indicative costs of €10–25 for two people.
Check the wind: some days can make the sea less suitable for swimming.
14:00
Lunch on the coast
Stop at a local tavern or eat a snack you bought before departure. For a lunch with a main course, budget around €15–25 per person.
During peak season, service can be slower at busy times.
16:00
Limnionas Beach and return
Continue to Limnionas for a second stop by the sea and a walk along the coast; the road is winding and it’s best to drive carefully. Access to the beach is generally free; leave time for the return trip and dinner, about €18–30 per person.
If the sea is rough or the parking lot is full, enjoy the view without pushing it with a swim stop.
Wrap up the trip with the island’s westernmost landscapes, leaving enough time for the final transfer.
08:00
Early departure
Have breakfast and head out early toward the far west: the roads are scenic but narrow and require attention, so driving times may be longer than the navigator suggests. Allow about €5–10 for breakfast and fill up before leaving the coast.
If your flight or ferry leaves early, skip this excursion and head straight to your next destination.
09:30
Drakei
Stroll through the village and stop at the viewpoints that can be reached safely; this is a small stop, not a tourist center with guaranteed services. Allow about 45–60 minutes, with no entrance fee.
Respect the local quiet and do not leave your car in narrow passages.
11:30
Agios Isidoros Shipyard
Reach the traditional shipyard and view the boats and coastal scenery from the outside. The visit is short and free, but activities and access may vary: ask for directions on site and do not enter work areas.
Be careful of vehicles and shipyard equipment.
13:00
Lunch and scenic stop
Choose an open taverna along the route or have a snack you brought with you. For a simple lunch, allow €15–25 per person; keep the stop brief if you need to reach the airport or port.
Check the actual departure time and allow a buffer for traffic.
14:30
Views of Mount Kerkis and transfer
Enjoy an accessible panoramic viewpoint on the Kerkis massif without attempting the climb to the summit: a high-altitude hike requires preparation, time, and favorable weather conditions. From this area, the transfer to the airport can take around 1 hour and 30 minutes or more; estimate fuel at approximately €10–20.
Do not schedule a summit trek before a flight or ferry.
