Guide to Dytiki Samos
DYTIKI SAMOS · ITINERARY

Western Samos (Samos, North Aegean, Greece) in 3 days – Complete itinerary

3 days / 2 nights · Coast, trekking, villages, history

The itinerary explores the western part of Samos by area, starting from Karlovasi and nearby Potami, continuing toward the coast of Marathokampos and dedicating the last day to coves reachable on foot. A rental car is the most practical solution for connecting the different spots, while for Mikro and Megalo Seitani you need to plan a hike or check the availability of boat connections. The timing is intentionally relaxed, with breaks for swimming and meals at tavernas. The rates listed are approximate and may vary depending on the season and opening hours.

Day 1

Karlovasi and the Potami Valley

10:00–21:00 Easy walks and a swim

Discover Karlovasi’s urban heritage and end the day between the beach, the monastery, and the Potami waterfalls.

10:00

A walk in Karlovasi

Spend about an hour in the center, taking in the city’s different sides and its historic buildings, among shopping streets and glimpses of the harbor. It’s a good starting point to get your bearings and stop for a first coffee break; free walk, consumption approximately €3–7.

If you arrive by car, look for parking outside the narrowest streets in the center.

11:30

Samos Tannery Museum

Visit the museum dedicated to the tanning tradition that shaped Karlovasi’s industrial history, housed in a former facility linked to leather processing. Allow about 45–60 minutes; admission, when charged, is typically just a few euros, around €2–5.

Opening hours may vary depending on the season: check them before you go.

13:00

Lunch in Karlovasi

Stop at a taverna in the center to sample Greek dishes, local salad, and grilled fish or meat. A simple lunch costs roughly €12–20 per person, drinks not included or depending on the restaurant.

For a more relaxed meal, avoid the peak hours of visiting groups.

15:00

Relax at Potami Beach

Reach Potami by car in about 10–15 minutes and take a break on the pebble beach, surrounded by a lush, scenic coastline. Access to the beach is free; bring reef shoes and water, as facilities may be limited or seasonal.

The sea can get rough: check conditions before swimming.

16:30

Monastery of Agios Ioannis the Theologian

Take a short visit to the monastery near Potami, soaking up its peaceful atmosphere and scenic setting. Allow 30–45 minutes; entry may be free or require a small donation, and religious areas call for respectful attire.

Check on site that the complex is open to the public at the time of your visit.

17:30

Potami Waterfalls Trail

Follow the path up the stream toward the waterfalls, allowing at least an hour for the hike, stops, and return. Some sections may require walking through water or over slippery rocks: the excursion is free, but it helps to have suitable shoes and a waterproof bag for personal items.

Do not attempt the water crossings if the sea or current is strong, and do not jump from the rocks.

20:00

Dinner in Karlovasi

Head back into town for a relaxed taverna dinner, choosing mezedes to share and a daily special. Plan on roughly €18–30 per person, depending on dishes and drinks.

In high season, it may be useful to book ahead, especially on weekends.

Day 2 – Marathokampos, the cave and the southern coast

09:30–21:00 By car, with a challenging walk

Explore the villages and beaches of the southwest coast, setting aside time for the climb to Pythagoras Cave.

09:30

Transfer to Ormos Marathokampou

Leave Karlovasi by car and reach Ormos Marathokampou in about 35–45 minutes, depending on traffic and the route. Take a short walk along the waterfront and at the harbor, also useful for buying water and supplies; the stop is free, while a coffee costs roughly €3–6.

The island’s roads are winding: allow extra time in your schedule.

10:45

Votsalakia Beach

Drive for just a few minutes to the long beach of Votsalakia, ideal for a swim break and a stroll along the seafront. Access is free; sun loungers and an umbrella, if available, can cost around €10–20 for a pair, with variable rates.

Bring sunscreen: natural shade is limited in this area.

12:30

Lunch in the Votsalakia area

Choose a taverna near the beach and use the break to recharge before the cave visit. A lunch with a main dish and a drink usually costs around €15–25 per person; check whether the place serves continuously outside the peak months.

Also buy enough water for the walk that follows.

14:15

Excursion to the Cave of Pythagoras

Drive to the cave access area and tackle the uphill trail, with steps and uneven sections: allow about 1.5–2.5 hours in total for the round trip, visit, and return. The site is linked to the tradition that Pythagoras found refuge here; access is generally free, but the path can be strenuous and is not suitable for those with mobility difficulties.

Wear hiking shoes, bring water, and do not start the climb during the hottest hours.

17:30

Swimming and a break at Limnionas Beach

After returning, drive to Limnionas to relax in a more sheltered bay and go for a swim if sea conditions allow. The beach is free to access; snacks or drinks nearby can cost around €5–12.

The final road is narrow in places: drive slowly and park only in permitted areas.

19:30

Dinner in Ormos Marathokampou

Head back to Ormos for dinner on the harbor, where you can choose fish, mezedes, or grilled specialties. Expect to spend around €20–35 per person, depending mainly on the fish selected and the drinks.

Ask the price of fish sold by weight before ordering.

Day 3 – Trekking to the Seitani Coves

08:00–18:30 Challenging hike and seaside stops

Reach the secluded beaches of Mikro and Megalo Seitani, spending the day on the coastal trail from Potami.

08:00

Departure for Potami and preparation

Drive to Potami and pack your bag before setting off on the trail toward the Seitani coves. Bring plenty of water, a packed lunch, and sun protection; the drive from Karlovasi takes about 10–15 minutes, while provisions will cost approximately €8–15 per person.

As an alternative to hiking, check in advance whether local boats are available during the season of your visit.

08:45

Coastal trail to Mikro Seitani

Follow the route from Potami along the coast, tackling a natural trail with sunny exposed sections and uneven ground. Allow about 1–1.5 hours to reach Mikro Seitani, depending on your pace and stops; the route is free and requires footwear with good grip.

Don't count on shops or water sources along the way.

10:15

Stop at Mikro Seitani Beach

Pause on the small pebble beach and enjoy the wild scenery, avoiding leaving litter or disturbing the environment. The stop is free and there are no reliable facilities: bring everything you need, including a towel and sun protection.

Assess the sea before entering the water: the bay is unsupervised.

11:30

Continue on to Megalo Seitani

Keep following the coastal trail to Megalo Seitani, a larger and more secluded bay; this stretch takes roughly 45–75 minutes. There is no entrance fee, but the rough terrain and lack of facilities mean you should take your time and save your energy for the return trip.

If the trail is wet or conditions are poor, stop at Mikro Seitani and head back.

12:45

Packed lunch at Megalo Seitani Beach

Take a long break on the beach, with a packed lunch and time to rest before heading back. There are no shops or facilities here: budget €8–15 for supplies bought before departure and take all your rubbish with you.

Stay in the shade whenever possible and drink regularly, especially in the summer months.

14:15

Return toward Potami

Retrace the trail in reverse, allowing about 2–2.5 hours and extra stops if needed. Don’t push the pace on the final stretch: fatigue and heat increase the risk of slips; the return is free and there are no rescue services available along the route.

Let someone know your plan and bring a fully charged phone, without relying on continuous coverage.

17:00

Refreshments and return to Karlovasi

Once back in Potami, treat yourself to a drink or snack and drive back to Karlovasi. Allow around €5–12 for refreshments; if you’re tired, don’t drive straight away and rest before leaving.

If returning by boat, confirm the time, boarding point, and operating conditions with the operator.

Practical tips

  • To explore Karlovasi, Marathokampos, and the trailhead areas with flexibility, a car is very useful; drive carefully on the narrow, winding roads.
  • For Potami Waterfalls and the beaches of Seitani, bring suitable shoes, water, and sun protection; some sections are slippery or lack shade.
  • The Cave of Pythagoras requires a strenuous climb: avoid the hottest hours and skip it if the terrain or your physical condition isn’t suitable.
  • Mikro and Megalo Seitani are secluded coves with no reliable facilities: bring food and water, check the weather and sea conditions, and take all your rubbish back with you.
