3 days / 2 nights · Geology, villages, monasteries, sea
This itinerary explores the variety of West Lesvos along a route from west to northwest. The first day is dedicated to Sigri and the landscapes of the Petrified Forest Geopark; the second combines Ypsilou Monastery with the village of Eressos and Skala Eressos Beach. The last day crosses the island toward Petra and Molyvos, among traditional architecture and sea views. A car is strongly recommended: distances, winding roads, and public transport connections make getting around less flexible.
Day 1 · Walking · 3.4 km · 40 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Discover the geological landscape of the far west and the small port of Sigri without leaving the area.
09:30
Arrival and walk in Sigri harbor
Spend the first half hour exploring the small harbor and the village lanes, which are also useful for getting your bearings and stopping for a coffee. If you’re coming from farther away, keep in mind that the inland roads are winding and take longer than distance alone might suggest.
Greek coffee or an espresso at the bar costs about €2–4.
10:15
Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest
Visit the museum to understand how the fossil forest formed, the island’s volcanism, and the specimens you’ll see outdoors. Allow about 60–90 minutes and check opening hours, possible closures, and admission fees in advance, as these may vary by season.
Suggested admission €5–10; prices and opening times may change.
12:00
Lunch in Sigri
Head back into the village by car or on foot, depending on where you parked, and choose a taverna near the harbor. Fish, salads, and legume-based dishes are common options; ask for the catch of the day and consider a longer break during the hottest hours.
Suggested lunch €15–30 per person, drinks included.
14:00
Petrified Forest of Lesvos
Drive to the geopark’s visitor area and follow the marked trails among fossilized trunks, volcanic rocks, and stark landscapes. Plan for 1–2 hours, choosing a route suited to the heat and trail conditions; do not touch or move any of the specimens.
Entry or a guided visit may cost about €5–10; bring water and a hat.
16:30
Return and stop at Castle of Sigri
Head back to Sigri to view the Ottoman castle from the outside and, if accessible, visit the enclosure. The structure stands by the harbor and offers a good viewpoint over the coast; check on site whether the interior spaces are open.
The exterior visit is brief; interior access may be limited or free, depending on current conditions.
18:00
Sunset and overnight stay in Sigri
End the day on the seafront or at a scenic coastal viewpoint, then have dinner and stay overnight in Sigri. Accommodation and restaurants are more limited here than in the larger towns, so it’s worth booking ahead, especially in high season.
Indicative dinner €18–35 per person; indicative overnight stay €50–120 per room.
Alternate a cultural visit inland with the atmosphere of the village of Eressos and some relaxation by the sea.
09:00
Departure from Sigri and transfer to the Monastery of Ypsilou
Reach the monastery by car along inland roads, allowing about 30–45 minutes and checking the latest route. The complex is set at a high elevation: drive carefully and plan a short stop to admire the landscape.
There are no tolls; for fuel, estimate a total indicative cost of €45–70 for the whole itinerary, depending on the car and route.
09:45
Visit to the Monastery of Ypsilou
Spend about 45–60 minutes at the monastery, exploring the historic buildings and the views over the arid western countryside. Access may be regulated by religious hours and dress code: covered shoulders and legs are a respectful choice.
Entry may be free or accompanied by a donation; check the opening hours before setting off.
11:15
Transfer to Eressos
Continue by car to Eressos, allowing about 30–40 minutes, with times varying depending on the route and road conditions. Park outside the narrowest center and continue on foot through the village streets.
Parking in small towns is limited: avoid driving into the narrow lanes.
12:00
Walk through the village of Eressos
Explore the center among stone houses, small squares, and cafés, taking in the contrast between the hillside village and the coast below. It’s a pleasant stop for a drink and to buy local products, with no paid visits required.
Coffee or a drink approximately €2–5.
13:15
Lunch in Eressos
Stop at a village taverna for a relaxed lunch before heading down to the sea. Daily specials and vegetarian options are often a good choice; check availability and prices on the menu.
Lunch approximately €15–28 per person.
15:00
Skala Eressos Beach
Reach Skala Eressos by car in about 10–15 minutes, or walk down only if you are prepared for the climb back up. Spend the afternoon at the beach and strolling along the seafront, where bars and tavernas are concentrated; beach services are more available in summer.
An umbrella and sun loungers, if available, can cost approximately €10–25; bring water and sunscreen.
19:00
Dinner and overnight stay in Skala Eressos
Stay on the seafront for dinner and spend your second night here, avoiding a long evening transfer. In high season the resort is busy, so it’s a good idea to book both your table and accommodation.
Dinner approximately €18–35 per person; overnight stay approximately €55–140 per room.
Explore the northwest of the island among the castle and alleys of Molyvos, the rock-hewn church of Petra, and the sea.
08:30
Departure from Skala Eressos to Molyvos
Leave early for the transfer to Molyvos, which can take about 1 hour and 45 minutes or more depending on the route and traffic. Refuel and check the road before leaving the west coast, as services are less frequent inland.
Plan for a short stop along the way and don’t rely on distance alone when estimating travel time.
10:30
Stroll through the village of Molyvos
Leave the car in the designated parking areas and explore the historic center on foot, with its cobbled lanes, traditional houses, and views over the harbor. The hills and uneven ground call for comfortable shoes and a leisurely pace.
The walk through the village is free; allow about 60–90 minutes.
12:00
Molyvos Castle
Head up to the castle to explore the fortifications and enjoy the views over the village and the sea. Access may depend on the season and opening hours: check upon arrival and set aside about an hour for the visit.
Indicative admission €3–8, if applicable.
13:30
Lunch in Molyvos
Head down to the center or the harbor for lunch, choosing a taverna with outdoor tables. Seafront restaurants may be pricier: check the menu before ordering fish by weight.
Indicative lunch €18–35 per person.
15:00
Transfer and visit to Panagia Glykofilousa
Drive to Petra in about 15–20 minutes and climb the steps leading to the church on the rock, a landmark of the town. The ascent is short but steep; inside, behave respectfully and check the opening hours.
Access is generally free; a small donation is optional.
16:15
Petra Beach
End your visits with a stroll or a swim at Petra Beach, just a few minutes from the center. The beach is convenient for a short stop and offers facilities mainly in the summer months; consider the wind and sea conditions before getting into the water.
Free beach; sun loungers and umbrella, if available, approximately €10–25.
18:00
Departure or last dinner in Petra
If you need to leave, allow plenty of time for the transfer to the airport or port and leave a generous margin for the island roads. If your trip continues the next day, stop in Petra for dinner and an overnight stay so you don’t have to drive long after sunset.
Indicative dinner €18–35 per person; indicative overnight stay €55–140 per room.
