Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesbos

In Sigri, the museum tells the story of the petrified forest’s formation and the island’s geology through finds and educational exhibits. It’s an excellent starting point for exploring this unique landscape.

Sigri Castle

The Ottoman fortress overlooks the small harbor and offers beautiful views of the sea and the village. It was built in the 18th century to protect the coast.

Lesbos Petrified Forest Park – Bali Alonia

This park lets you observe fossilized tree trunks that remained where they were preserved for millions of years. Paths and information panels help you read the landscape and its geological history.

Ypsilou Monastery

Perched on Mount Ordymnos, the monastery offers a peaceful atmosphere and sweeping views over the western part of the island. Its history dates back to the Middle Ages.

Skala Eressos Beach

Long and sandy, it is one of the most popular beaches in Lesbos and looks out onto crystal-clear water. The nearby promenade is lively with tavernas and cafés.

Kalloni Salt Pans

The salt pans and wetlands of the gulf are an important habitat for birds, including flamingos during certain times of the year. They are an evocative stop for anyone who loves birdwatching and lagoon landscapes.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

To explore Dytiki Lesvos freely, a car is the most convenient option: distances are long and many beaches and rural areas are not well served by public transport. Buses connect the main centers, but frequencies and schedules can vary depending on the season; check them in advance, especially for evening travel. In Eressos, Sigri, and the smaller villages, it may be useful to rent a car or a scooter, checking road conditions and insurance coverage. During peak periods, it is wise to book the vehicle in advance. If you drive, allow more time than expected: the roads are often winding and pass through mountainous areas.

When to go

From May to June and from September to October, the climate is generally pleasant and the resorts are less crowded than in the height of summer. July and August are ideal for the sea, but bring higher temperatures and greater demand for accommodation and rental cars. Spring is particularly suitable for hiking and visiting the Petrified Forest; in winter, some tourist services may reduce hours or close.

Where to eat

In the tavernas of Eressos, Sigri, and the inland villages, you'll find home-style Greek cooking, with fish and seafood along the coast and dishes based on vegetables, legumes, and meat in the rural areas. Look for the island’s specialties, such as local cheeses, olive oil, and ouzo; in the Kalloni Gulf area, sardines are also highly regarded. Daily menus and the catch can change with the season: asking what is fresh is often the best way to choose.

Quick tips

  1. Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen: in summer the sun is intense, especially during visits to outdoor sites.
  2. Check bus and ferry schedules in advance and do not assume frequent connections between villages.
  3. To visit the Petrified Forest, find out opening hours and trail conditions before setting out.
  4. In smaller towns it can be useful to have cash, because not all businesses accept cards or have an ATM.
