Day 1 – Agali Gorge, Steni and views of Dirfi

09:00–19:00 Active but adjustable

Discover the nature and landscapes of the western slopes of Dirfi, alternating a walk, a stop in a village, and short car transfers.

09:00

Panagia Makrymallis Monastery

Drive to the monastery from Psachna and set aside about 40 minutes for the visit, if the grounds are open. Admire the architecture of the complex and the peaceful setting on the edge of the settlement; admission is generally free, but any donations are optional. Dress respectfully.

Opening hours may vary: check in advance and do not base your day on a guaranteed visit.

10:00

Transfer to Agali Gorge

Continue by car to the access point for the gorge, allowing about 30–40 minutes depending on the route chosen and traffic conditions. The roads become more winding as you approach the hills: drive carefully and pull over only in permitted areas. There is no access fee for the trail.

Set your navigation to the starting point of the hiking route before leaving Psachna.

10:45

Walk in Agali Gorge

Explore the initial stretch of the gorge on foot, among rock walls, shady vegetation, and the stream, which may be more or less visible depending on the season. Plan on about 1 hour and 45 minutes in total, including a break and the return along the same route; avoid continuing onto more demanding sections without assessing the terrain and conditions. The hike is free.

Wear hiking shoes with good grip and bring water: the ground may be uneven or slippery.

12:45

Lunch in Steni Dirfyos

Drive to Steni in about 10–20 minutes and stop at a village taverna. Choose local dishes, salads, and grilled specialties: expect roughly €12–25 per person, depending on food and drinks. After lunch, take a short walk through the center and admire the houses at the foot of the mountain.

On weekends the village can be busy: arriving early helps you find parking.

14:30

Stop in the village of Steni

Spend about 45 minutes exploring the central streets and the shaded areas around the village at a relaxed pace. It’s a good chance for a coffee break or to buy water and supplies before heading up into the mountains; expect around €2–5 for a drink, depending on the venue. Access to the village is free.

Ask on site for up-to-date information about road and trail conditions.

15:30

Scenic road to the Dirfi refuge

Drive up to the Dirfys Mountain Refuge, allowing about 30–40 minutes and more if you want to stop at the viewpoints. The mountain road can be narrow and winding: drive slowly and do not stop on bends or in the roadway. There is no toll on the route, while the cost depends on the vehicle and fuel.

Before setting off, check the weather and road conditions; in fog or bad weather, it is better to skip the ascent.

16:15

Views from the Dirfys Mountain Refuge

Stop near the refuge for a break and to enjoy the mountain landscape without taking on the climb to the summit. The refuge’s opening hours and services may depend on the season and the day: treat the stop as scenic and self-guided, without relying on food or guaranteed facilities. No ticket is required to enjoy the view.

Bring a warm layer: the altitude and wind can make the air feel noticeably cooler than in Steni.

17:15

View of Mount Dirfi and return

Wrap up with a short stop at a safe spot along the route to admire the Dirfi massif and take photos; this stop is not the same as the summit hike, which requires preparation, equipment, and much more time. Start heading back to Steni and then to the base of your trip, allowing at least 45–60 minutes to the Psachna area, depending on your final destination. The scenic stop is free.

Avoid driving on mountain roads after dark if you do not know the route.
