This itinerary uses the town of Kos as a base and focuses the first day in the historic center, which is easy to explore on foot. The second day pairs the Asklepion with the mountain village of Zia, with a transfer best arranged by car or by checking the seasonal buses in advance. The third day follows a route westward, passing through Antimachia and Plaka to Kefalos and the southern beaches. Times and prices are indicative: opening hours, connections, and costs may change between high and low season.

Explore the historic heart of the city on foot, alternating between monuments, the museum and breaks along the waterfront.
09:00
Plane Tree of Hippocrates
Start from the square near the port and admire the famous plane tree and the Ottoman fountain, keeping in mind that the current tree is not the ancient one. The stop is short and free; allow about 20 minutes for the spot and for getting your bearings in the center.
The square can be very crowded at midday.
09:30
Neratzia Castle
Walk to the entrance of the Knights' castle, next to the port, and decide whether to visit depending on the day's opening hours: access and times may vary. If it is open, allow 60–90 minutes for the walls, courtyards and views; the possible ticket is approximately €4–€8.
Check accessibility and opening hours on site, especially out of season.
11:15
Ancient Agora of Kos
Continue on foot among the ruins of the agora, where you can make out remains of public buildings, columns and commercial spaces from the ancient city. Allow about 45–60 minutes; access to the area may be free or regulated according to the site's arrangements.
Wear sturdy-soled shoes: some surfaces are uneven.
12:30
Lunch break downtown
Choose a tavern or restaurant around Eleftherias Square, so you’ll be just a few minutes’ walk from the next stops. For a simple meal, expect around €12–€22 per person, drinks excluded or included depending on the venue.
In high season, it may be worth booking dinner in advance; it’s less necessary for lunch.
14:00
Archaeological Museum of Kos
Set aside about an hour for the collections, which help put the island’s finds and archaeological site visits into context. Admission can vary roughly between €6 and €12; check the closing day and opening hours before you go.
This visit makes a nice break during the hottest hours of the day.
15:30
Casa Romana
Walk to this restored domus and take in the layout of the rooms, the mosaics, and the architectural features that tell the story of life in Roman times. Allow 45–60 minutes and budget roughly €6–€10, depending on combined tickets and access arrangements.
Check whether the ticket is included in any passes or combined admissions.
19:00
Harbor stroll and dinner
Head back toward the harbor for an evening walk among boats, cafés, and the pedestrian streets of the center. For a full dinner, budget roughly €20–€35 per person; from the main accommodations in town, it’s generally easy to reach on foot.
For a quieter evening, move a few streets away from the waterfront.
Discover the island’s main ancient sanctuary and spend the afternoon wandering the lanes and viewpoints of Zia.
08:30
Depart from Kos Town
Reach the Asklepieion by car, taxi, or bus if the service is running: the drive takes about 15–20 minutes, while by bus you should allow for waiting times and stops. A taxi ride can cost roughly €15–€25 per vehicle, depending on the season and fare.
To combine the site with Zia without being tied to schedules, a car is the most flexible option.
09:00
Asklepieion of Kos
Visit the sanctuary dedicated to Asclepius, laid out across terraces linked by steps and uphill paths. Allow 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours; admission is roughly in the €8–€15 range, to be checked according to the season.
Bring water, a hat, and comfortable shoes: the area is exposed to the sun.
11:15
Transfer to Zia
By car, the journey from the site to Zia takes roughly 25–35 minutes, depending on the route and traffic. If you’re using buses, check connections and return trips in advance: frequencies and services change throughout the year.
Stock up on water before leaving the city.
12:00
Stroll through Zia’s center
Take your time exploring the village’s narrow streets, among local-product shops, terraces, and views over the slopes of Dikeos. The visit is free and takes about an hour; factor in a stop in the shops if you’re looking for honey, spices, or ceramics.
At midday, some businesses may keep shorter hours.
13:15
Lunch in Zia
Settle into a village taverna to sample Greek dishes and island specialties, budgeting around €15–€25 per person. Before ordering, ask whether bread, water, and the cover charge are included in the bill.
In summer, book ahead or arrive a little early.
16:30
Scenic afternoon and return
Spend the rest of the afternoon on a short walk around the village or relaxing on a terrace, without tackling long trails in the heat of the day. Head back to Kos Town by car in about 30–40 minutes; for a taxi, budget roughly €25–€40 per vehicle.
Sunset is very popular: expect traffic and parking delays.
19:30
Dinner in Kos Town
Return to base and choose dinner near your accommodation, so you avoid another transfer in the evening. A meal with main courses and a drink costs roughly €18–€30 per person.
If you have rented a car, check the property’s parking rules in advance.
Crossing the island to the west, alternating a castle and a natural area with villages and beaches on the Kefalos peninsula.
08:00
Depart for Antimachia
Leave Kos Town by car: the drive to Antimachia takes around 30–40 minutes, depending on the road and traffic. A car is especially useful today for linking the stops; daily rental can cost roughly €35–€75, plus fuel.
Check the fuel level and insurance coverage conditions in advance.
08:45
Antimachia Castle
Visit the medieval fortifications, wandering among the walls and the inner ruins; allow about 45–60 minutes for the stop. Entry may be free, but conditions and opening times should be checked locally; bring water because the area is exposed.
Do not go beyond the marked areas and watch out for uneven ground.
10:15
Plaka Forest
Drive to the wooded area of Plaka and enjoy a short break in the shade before continuing to Kefalos. The stop is generally free and can last 30–45 minutes; observe the wildlife from a distance and do not leave food or litter behind.
The presence of animals is not guaranteed and it is not appropriate to feed them.
11:30
Kefalos
Head up to the village for a stroll among the houses and the viewpoints over the bay, allowing about an hour for the visit. Access is free; to reach the center from the coastal area, you’ll need a car or a taxi, with travel times varying depending on your location.
The village streets can be narrow: park only in designated spaces.
12:45
Lunch in Kefalos
Stop at a tavern in the village or near the coast for a leisurely lunch, with an estimated cost of €15–€25 per person. Allow about an hour and keep your swimsuit and sunscreen handy for the afternoon.
Ask which fish dishes are available that day before ordering.
14:15
Agios Stefanos Beach
Head down to the bay for a stop of about an hour and a half among clear water and the remains of the basilica visible near the shore. Beach access is free; sunbeds and umbrellas, if available, can cost approximately €10–€25 per couple.
Sea and seabed conditions can change: check the waves before swimming.
16:15
Paradise Beach
Wrap up the afternoon on this sandy beach, setting aside about two hours to swim and relax. Access is free, while any beach services have variable costs; from the Agios Stefanos area, the drive takes roughly 10–15 minutes.
Before heading back, check your fuel and allow about 40–55 minutes of driving to Kos Town.
