Getting around
The town of Kos is easy to explore on foot and by bike, especially along the seafront and the cycling paths. To reach the beaches and other parts of the island, you can use the buses, checking timetables and frequency because they change depending on the season. Renting a car or scooter offers more freedom, but in summer it’s best to book in advance. Taxis are available, but for the most popular routes it’s a good idea to agree on the fare or ask about prices.
When to go
From May to June and from September to early October, the weather is pleasant and the island is generally less crowded than in peak season. July and August are ideal for those looking for very hot days and lively beach life, but you should expect more visitors and prices that are often higher. In spring and autumn, the sea may be cooler and some tourist services have reduced opening hours.
Where to eat
In the town of Kos you’ll find a wide selection of tavernas and restaurants, while in the villages and near the beaches you can look for family-run trattorias. To sample the local cuisine, try Greek dishes such as mezedes, grilled fish, and specialties made with cheese or honey. Menus and prices can vary a lot: in the more touristy areas it’s worth checking the displayed menu before sitting down.
Quick tips
- 01Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen with you: in summer the sun is intense and shade can be scarce on the beaches.
- 02Check the bus and ferry schedules on the day itself, especially outside the high season.
- 03If you want to explore the island by car or scooter, check insurance coverage, vehicle condition, and traffic rules before setting off.
- 04For visits to archaeological sites or churches, find out in advance about opening hours and any dress code required.
