Guide to Chongqing
CHONGQING · ITINERARY

Chongqing (China) in 1 day – Complete itinerary

1 day · Architecture, views, transport, rivers

The day combines four iconic experiences: the terraced complex of Hongya Cave, the Line 2 subway pass-through at Liziba, the urban heart of Jiefangbei, and the Yangtze cable car crossing. The itinerary follows the set order and alternates between walking visits and transfers, with breaks for lunch and dinner built into the stops. Since Chongqing is hilly and traffic can be heavy, it’s wise to allow extra time for transfers and use the metro whenever the route allows. The times shown are a suggested schedule: check official channels for any access rules, tickets, and service conditions.

Day 1 – Hongya Cave, Liziba and downtown Chongqing

10:00–21:00 Fast-paced, with metro or taxi transfers and scheduled breaks

Discover four of the city’s symbolic sights by following an urban route through architecture, transport, and river views.

10:00

Hongya Cave (Hongyadong)

Spend about 90 minutes exploring the terraced walkways and panoramic viewpoints of the complex, noticing how the buildings rise along the slope above the Jialing River. To reach the next stop, allow about 30–45 minutes by taxi, depending on traffic, or a metro transfer with some walking; budget roughly 2–30 CNY for transport. Access to public areas may be free, while shopping and food and drink are extra.

The visit is enjoyable even during the day; for any access, services, or paid activities, check the official channels.

12:00

Liziba Station (train through the building)

Reach the station and watch from the viewing area as Line 2 passes through the residential complex: allow about 45–60 minutes for photos and waiting between trains. If you want to ride the line, the metro ticket costs roughly 2–5 CNY, depending on the route; the viewpoint is normally visitable without a dedicated ticket. Have lunch nearby or along the way and allow about 20–35 minutes to get back toward Jiefangbei by metro or taxi, plus the time needed to reach the stop.

Keep the station passages clear and follow the signs: this is a daily transport hub, not just a photo spot.

14:30

Jiefangbei Square

Spend about 90 minutes in the square and the surrounding shopping streets, taking in the central monument and the contrast between skyscrapers, signs, and pedestrian streets. Visiting the public areas is free; for a snack or drink, budget roughly 10–40 CNY, while a simple meal can range from about 25 to 80 CNY. To reach the cable car station south of the central area, allow about 10–20 minutes on foot or a short taxi ride, depending on your starting point.

The area is full of intersections and level changes: check the route on the map and don’t rely only on straight-line distance.

16:30

Yangtze River Cableway

Reach the station on the city side and allow 60–90 minutes in total for any waiting, the crossing, and enjoying the river and urban hill views. The ride takes only a few minutes; the price is roughly in the range of 20–30 CNY for a one-way trip, but fares, ticketing method, and waiting times should be checked through official channels. You can end with dinner in the area, budgeting about 40–120 CNY for a meal, and keep the rest of the evening for returning by metro or taxi.

If there is a queue or unfavorable weather, keep your schedule flexible and check availability and fares in advance.

Practical tips

  • Install an offline map and check the routes before you leave: elevation changes and pedestrian connections can make seemingly short journeys take a long time.
  • Allow extra time for car transfers, as city traffic can vary significantly; the metro is often useful for getting back to Jiefangbei.
  • Bring a locally accepted payment method and a small amount of cash in CNY for any unexpected needs.
  • Before your visit, check official channels for any tickets, access rules, and operating conditions for the cable car and attractions.
