Getting around
The metro and monorail are the most convenient ways to get around: the network is extensive and connects the airport with the city’s main areas. Line 2 runs right past the famous Liziba Building, passing through it, and the ride also offers scenic views. To pay, you can buy a transit card or use an enabled payment app; check in advance that it works with your payment method. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are useful in the evening or for reaching less well-served areas, but traffic can be heavy. Chongqing is very hilly: on maps and navigation apps, pay close attention to elevation changes, stairs, and exits, because a short trip as the crow flies may take longer than expected.
When to go
Spring and autumn are generally the most pleasant times to visit Chongqing, with milder temperatures than in summer. Summer is often very hot, humid, and rainy, while winter is cool and damp; the city is also known for its haze, which can limit visibility. If possible, avoid the busiest periods, such as National Day at the beginning of October and Chinese New Year, and check the forecast before you leave.
Where to eat
To taste local flavors, look for a Chongqing-style hot pot restaurant, famous for its spicy, aromatic broth, or a stall serving xiaomian noodles. Jiefangbei offers plenty of choices, while Ciqikou is a convenient place to try snacks and specialties in a historic district, though it can be crowded. If you do not like spicy food, ask for a mild version or a non-spicy broth: the chili level can be high. In the most popular places, it is normal to share dishes and wait for a table during peak hours.
