Hersonissos is a practical base for exploring the northern coast of Crete, as well as reaching Heraklion, Knossos and the inland highlands. This itinerary alternates cultural sightseeing days with beach breaks, setting aside a full day for Spinalonga and another for the Lassithi Plateau. Getting around is easier with a rental car; buses are also available to Heraklion and some coastal towns, with frequencies varying by season. Opening hours, ferry connections and fares may change: it’s worth checking them before departure.

Getting your bearings around the port, promenade and coast of Chersonissos without straying far from the town.
10:00
Walk to the port
Start from the port of Chersonissos and follow the waterfront promenade to get to know the town. Set aside about an hour for the area, watching the boats and the alleys leading up toward the center; the walk is free.
In the morning, the waterfront is quieter and less hot.
11:30
Aquaworld Aquarium
Visit the aquarium and reptile rescue center, with an estimated stay of 1–1,5 hours. The venue is small and suitable for families too; expect an approximate ticket price of around 8–12 € per adult and check opening days, especially out of season.
The visit is more interesting when accompanied by the staff’s explanations.
13:15
Lunch in the coastal center
Stop at a taverna near the port to try Cretan salad, dakos, or the catch of the day. Budget about 15–25 € per person for a simple lunch, drinks excluded or included depending on the place.
15:00
Sarakino Fountain and a walk along the waterfront
Head to Sarakino Fountain, a distinctive landmark of the port area, and continue leisurely along the coast. The visit is free and takes about 30–45 minutes, leaving time for a coffee break or photos.
The fountain is best appreciated as a short stop during the walk.
17:00
Star Beach swim
Reach Star Beach on foot along the coast or with a short taxi ride, depending on where you’re staying. You can choose between beach access and paid services; for sunbeds, water activities, or attractions, expect roughly 5–25 € or more, depending on the season and what you use.
19:30
Dinner by the sea
Head back toward the harbor for a relaxed dinner and an evening stroll. A tavern dinner with a main course and a drink can cost about 18–30 € per person; the area is lively, so booking ahead can be useful in the summer months.
Explore the Minoan palace of Malia and alternate it with a quieter beach along the Stalis coastline.
09:00
Transfer to Malia
From Chersonissos, reach Malia in about 15–25 minutes by car; alternatively, the coastal buses can be convenient but depend on seasonal timetables. The drive is short and parking can be limited at midday.
09:45
Malia Palace
Set aside about 1.5–2 hours for the archaeological site, the third major Minoan palace center in Crete. Take in the central courtyard, the storerooms, and the reconstructed structures to understand how the complex was organized; admission is paid, roughly 6–12 €, with fees and access subject to change.
Bring water and a hat: much of the visit takes place outdoors.
12:15
Lunch in Old Malia
Move into the historic center of Malia, just a few minutes’ drive from the site, and choose a taverna in the alleyways. Allow about 15–25 € per person for a meal with local specialties; after lunch, enjoy a 45–60 minute walk among small squares and traditional houses.
14:30
Potamos Beach
Head to Potamos Beach, near the palace, for a swim in a bay that is generally less built-up than the central beaches. Access to the beach is usually free; sunbeds and an umbrella, when available, can cost around €10–20 for the set.
17:00
Stop at Stalis Beach
Continue to Stalis, about 10–15 minutes away by car, for a stroll along the seafront or a second swim. The beach is equipped and offers bars and facilities; allow about 1–1.5 hours and an optional expense for drinks or rentals.
19:00
Return and dinner in Chersonissos
Head back to base, allowing around 15–25 minutes by car or the time needed to wait for the bus. For dinner, choose a taverna away from the main tourist strip: an indicative spend is €18–30 per person.
Get to know Heraklion's main landmarks by focusing your movements within a compact area of the city center.
08:30
Departure for Heraklion
Reach Heraklion in about 30–45 minutes by car from Chersonissos, or use a direct intercity bus, checking up-to-date stops and frequencies. If you are traveling by car, consider a public or private parking lot and continue on foot in the center.
09:30
Heraklion Archaeological Museum
Set aside at least two hours for the Minoan collections, including frescoes, pottery, and artifacts from Knossos and the island's other palaces. The ticket is roughly in the €10–20 range for an adult, but prices and concessions may change; also check for any combined tickets with the archaeological sites.
Take your time through the rooms devoted to the finds from Knossos: they are among the museum's richest sections.
12:00
Morosini Fountain and Lion Square
Walk to Morosini Fountain in the heart of the city and stop in the square for a break. The outdoor visit is free; in the surrounding streets you'll find cafés and venues for a light lunch for around €10–18 per person.

14:15
Agios Titos Church
Visit Agios Titos Church, an important place of worship in the historic center, and admire the façade and interior discreetly if services are in progress. Entry is generally free; allow 20–30 minutes and wear respectful clothing.
15:00

Continue to the Venetian Loggia, one of the city’s most representative civic buildings, and admire its arches and architectural details from the outside. The visit takes about 20–30 minutes; any interior access may depend on the offices and opening hours at the time.
16:00
Rocca a Mare Fortress
Walk to the port to visit the Venetian fortress by the sea, reachable from the center in about 15 minutes on foot. Allow 45–60 minutes and an approximate admission fee of 4–10 € if the monument is open; wind and sun are intense on the pier, so bring water.
18:00
Return to Chersonissos
Head back by bus or car, allowing about 30–45 minutes of travel and possible delays leaving the city. For dinner, you can stop in Chersonissos or eat in Heraklion before departure, with average costs of about 18–30 € per person.
Dive deeper into Minoan civilization at Knossos and discover the traditional character of Archanes.
08:00
Departure for Knossos
From Chersonissos, reach the site in about 30–40 minutes by car; by public transport, you need to go via Heraklion and plan connections carefully. Arriving early helps you avoid the heat and larger crowds.
09:00

Dedicate about 2–2.5 hours to the main Minoan palace complex, following the routes through courtyards, halls, and reconstructed remains. The ticket is typically 15–25 € per adult, but it may vary depending on the season and access arrangements; check opening hours and any reservations in advance.
A guide or audio guide helps distinguish the ancient structures from the reconstruction work.
11:45
Break and transfer to Archanes
Stop for a drink or a snack near the site, then reach Archanes in about 20–30 minutes by car. The route crosses a rural, wine-growing area; by public transport the transfer is less direct and requires checking connections.
13:00

Have lunch in the village center, known for its colorful houses and taverns serving Cretan cuisine. Budget around 15–25 € per person and allow at least an hour, especially if you want to try seasonal dishes or local products.
14:30
Walk through the center of Archanes
Explore the village streets and squares on foot, pausing to admire the restored facades and the atmosphere that feels less beach-oriented than the coast. The walk is free and takes about 1–1.5 hours; cafés and small shops offer an unhurried break.
16:30
Optional winery tasting
If you have a car and have booked ahead, round off the day with a visit or tasting at a winery in the Archanes and Peza wine region. Experiences can cost roughly 10–30 € per person; avoid driving after drinking and arrange a designated driver.
18:00
Return to Chersonissos
Allow about 35–50 minutes to get back to your base, depending on traffic and the winery you choose. The evening can be free or devoted to a simple dinner near your accommodation, with an estimated cost of 15–25 € per person.
Visit one of Crete’s best-known historic islands and enjoy the scenery of Mirabello Bay.
08:00

Reach Agios Nikolaos in about 45–60 minutes by car; by bus the trip is possible, but the day needs to be planned around the actual schedules. Park outside the most central area if the waterfront is crowded.
09:15
Stroll around Lake Voulismeni
Walk around the lake and stop at the scenic viewpoints overlooking the water, between cafés and the town center’s stairways. The visit is on your own and takes about 45–60 minutes; breakfast or a coffee by the lakefront can cost roughly €4–10.
10:30
Transfer to Elounda and boarding
Continue by car to Elounda, about 15–20 minutes, or check the local services. From here or from Plaka, boat excursions to Spinalonga depart: duration and price depend on the boarding point and the package, with a total indicative cost of about €10–25 for the sea transfer.
11:30
Visit Spinalonga
Spend about 1.5–2 hours on the fortified island, following the walls and traces of the settlement linked to the history of the leper colony. Access to the island may require a separate ticket, roughly €8–15; bring closed shoes, water, and sun protection.
Check the last return boat and keep your ticket or boarding instructions safe.
14:00

Leave a time buffer of about 45–60 minutes for the journey, especially in high season. If you used the bus, check the last useful return service before boarding for Spinalonga.

08:00
