Getting around
Chersonissos is located about 25 km east of Heraklion and is connected to the city and other places along the northern coast by KTEL intercity buses. Timetables can vary by season, so it’s worth checking in advance, especially for evening returns. In the town center and along the seafront it’s easy to get around on foot, but to explore nearby villages and beaches it’s useful to rent a car. In high season traffic can be heavy: anyone choosing a scooter should pay particular attention and always wear a helmet.
When to go
From May to October the climate is generally suitable for the beach, with July and August being hotter and busier. June and September often offer pleasant temperatures and a less intense atmosphere, while in spring and autumn the days are mild but some seasonal services may have reduced hours. To visit archaeological sites and inland destinations, the shoulder seasons are particularly enjoyable.
Where to eat
Along the seafront and in the streets of the center you’ll find Greek tavernas, seafood restaurants, and places serving international cuisine. To taste Cretan dishes, look for preparations with local olive oil, cheeses, seasonal vegetables, and grilled meats; specialties worth trying include dakos and kalitsounia. In the inland villages you can find quieter tavernas: ask what the daily dishes are and check whether the fish is fresh and local.
Quick tips
- 01In summer, book the most popular accommodation and restaurants in advance, especially on weekends.
- 02Check the KTEL bus schedules before you travel: frequencies and routes can change between high and low season.
- 03Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen on excursions, because shade can be scarce during the middle of the day.
- 04If you rent a car, check parking conditions and insurance coverage in advance.
