Getting around
Cagliari’s city center is easy to explore on foot, even though the historic neighborhoods spread across hills and some streets are steep. For longer trips, CTM buses connect the center, the beaches, and the various districts; check timetables and routes on the company’s website or app. The light rail is especially useful for reaching some towns in the surrounding area, but it does not directly serve the historic center. From the airport, you can reach the city by train in about ten minutes. If you’re traveling by car, keep in mind that parking and traffic can be limited in the central areas.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting the city and alternating between walks, museums, and trips to the sea, with generally pleasant temperatures. Summer is hot and sunny, perfect for Poetto beach, but it can also be humid and busier. Winter is mild compared with many other Italian cities, although windy or rainy days are possible. If you want to attend the Feast of Sant’Efisio, check the dates in advance: the main procession takes place on 1° maggio.
Where to eat
To taste the local cuisine, look for trattorias and restaurants serving fregula, malloreddus, culurgiones, and seafood dishes, as well as Cagliari specialties such as burrida. In the Marina district and the streets around the San Benedetto market, you’ll find a range of options, from casual eateries to more refined spots. For a quick lunch, explore markets and delicatessens, checking opening hours. Ask which dishes are in season and consider booking on weekends and during high season.

- 01Wear comfortable shoes: Castello, Stampace, and Villanova are best explored on foot, but they involve uphill walks and uneven paving.
- 02In summer, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen; during the hottest hours, plan indoor visits or a break in the shade.
- 03To reach Poetto, you can use the city buses; check the latest departures, especially in the evening and on public holidays.
- 04To visit the San Benedetto market, check opening hours and days in advance: not all businesses keep the same schedule.
