Day 1
Discover some of the main historic and monumental sites in central Berlin on foot.
10:00
Brandenburg Gate
Start at the Brandenburger Tor, a symbol of the city and a landmark for getting your bearings in Mitte. Take in the Quadriga and the contrast between the monumental area and the surrounding streets; the exterior visit is free. Plan about 30–40 minutes for the square and photos.
The Brandenburger Tor station is served by trains and urban lines; check for any works or service changes.
10:45
Reichstag and dome
Reach the Reichstag with a short walk and admire the historic façade and the contemporary dome from the outside. Access to the dome and the panoramic terrace is generally free, but requires advance registration and remains subject to availability and security checks. Allow about 60–90 minutes if you have a confirmed booking.
Check the official Bundestag website for registration procedures, opening hours, and any entry requirements.
12:15
Holocaust Memorial
Walk for about 10–15 minutes to the Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas. Cross the field of stelae respectfully, leaving time to explore it in silence; visiting the outdoor area is free. The underground information center, if accessible, may require additional time and has opening hours to check.
The stelae have uneven heights and passages: please be careful and do not climb on them.
13:15
Lunch break in Mitte
Stop at one of the cafés or restaurants between Potsdamer Platz and Friedrichstraße, choosing based on how much time you want to devote to lunch. For a simple meal, budget roughly €12–20; a table-service restaurant may cost more. Booking ahead can be useful at the most popular places.
Prices are approximate and vary depending on the venue and the menu.
14:45
Stroll along Unter den Linden
Head back toward the city center along Unter den Linden and take in the institutional and cultural buildings lining the boulevard. The walk to Gendarmenmarkt takes about 15–20 minutes, depending on stops. This stop is free and offers a pleasant link between the morning’s monuments and the historic center.
If you prefer to cut down on walking, use public transport for one or two stops, after checking the service.
15:30
Gendarmenmarkt
Explore one of Berlin’s most picturesque squares, with the Konzerthaus in the center and the German and French churches on either side. Visiting the square is generally free; access to the buildings and events may involve indicative tickets of around 5–15 € or different rates. Check in advance for any works, closures, or events.
Set aside 45–60 minutes, including a coffee break if you like.
17:00
Berlin Cathedral and surroundings
Continue on foot to the Berliner Dom, about 20–25 minutes away, passing through Unter den Linden once more. Admire the exterior and, if opening hours and availability allow, visit the interior and the dome: budget around 10–15 € for an adult ticket, to be checked on official channels. Reaching the dome requires time and a minimum level of stamina for the stairs.
Check opening hours and any restrictions before you set off.
19:00
Dinner in the Mitte area
End the day with dinner near the Cathedral, at Hackescher Markt, or along the way back. Plan on about 18–35 € for a sit-down meal, with variations depending on the cuisine and drinks. From Hackescher Markt, you can easily reach several stations for your return trip.
To head back, check nearby S-Bahn, U-Bahn, and tram lines in real time.
