This small seaside village is famous for its stone houses and turquoise waters, perfect for a swim on warm days. At sunset, the waterfront offers especially picturesque views.

An ancient fishing village gathered around a sheltered bay, with traditional architecture and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s a pleasant starting point for exploring the southern coast of Mani.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

To explore Anatoliki Mani freely, a car is the most practical solution: it links the coastal towns, beaches, and inland villages, which are often difficult to reach by public transport. The roads are scenic, but many stretches are narrow and winding, so it’s best to drive slowly and allow more time than expected. Buses serve some main locations, but services can be infrequent, especially outside the high season. In historic centers and smaller villages, parking can be scarce: it’s better to leave the car in the designated spaces and continue on foot.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting the region, with pleasant temperatures for walking and getting around between the coast and the villages. Summer brings long days and excellent conditions for the sea, but it can be very hot and more crowded, especially in August. In winter, the landscape is quiet, but some accommodations and restaurants may reduce their hours or close: it’s advisable to check in advance.

Where to eat

In Gytheio, , and the seaside villages, you’ll find tavernas and restaurants where you can try fish, seafood, and traditional Mani cuisine. Regional specialties to look for include syglino, smoked and preserved pork, local sausages, olives, and olive oil. In smaller towns, the choice may be limited, especially outside the high season, so it’s useful to check opening hours and book during busy periods.

Quick tips

  1. Stock up on fuel before driving the more remote roads: service stations are not available everywhere.
  2. Wear suitable shoes if you want to explore trails, rocky coves, or stone-paved alleys.
  3. In summer, protect yourself from the sun and bring water with you, especially during visits to villages and outdoor sites.
  4. Check bus timetables, restaurant hours, and accommodation availability in advance, as they can vary significantly depending on the season.
