Guide to Aghios Vassilios
AGHIOS VASSILIOS · ITINERARY

Aghios Vassilios (Rethymno, Crete, Greece) in 3 days – Complete itinerary

3 days / 2 nights · Sea, gorges, monasteries, villages

Plakias is a practical base for discovering the southern stretch of Agios Vasileios, with beaches reachable in just a few minutes and tavernas along the seafront. The first day is dedicated to Plakias Bay and its little coves, the second to the landscapes of Kourtaliotiko and Preveli, while the third combines the mountain village of Spili with the open coast of Triopetra. A car is strongly recommended: public transport links in southern Crete are limited and timetables can be seasonal. The spending estimates are indicative and do not include flights or transfers to/from the airport.

Day 1 – Plakias Bay and nearby beaches

09:00–20:30 Relaxed, with short drives

Get acquainted with the Plakias coast by alternating a stroll along the seafront with beaches and coves.

09:00

Breakfast and orientation in Plakias

Spend the morning in the center and along the seafront, also useful for buying water and checking sea conditions. A simple breakfast in a café costs around 5–9 € per person.

In summer, it’s best to set off early to find parking near the beach.

10:00

Plakias Beach

Relax on the long town beach and take a walk toward the headland to admire the bay from the eastern end. Beach access is free; sunbeds and an umbrella, if available, can cost around 8–15 € for a set.

12:30

Lunch on the seafront

Choose a taverna in town for Cretan dishes, salad, fish, or meze. Budget about 15–25 € per person, depending on food and drinks.

14:00

Souda Beach

Drive to Souda Bay in about 10–15 minutes and spend the hottest hours here, enjoying clear water and a more sheltered coastline than Plakias. Access is generally free; facilities and sunbeds may vary by season.

16:30

Damnoni Beach

Continue on to Damnoni, about 15–20 minutes by car from Souda, for a stop on its wide, sheltered beach. Bring reef shoes if you prefer to move around the rocky stretches; a guided sea activity can cost around 15–40 €.

18:00

Ammoudaki Beach and return

End with a short visit to Ammoudaki, a small cove near Damnoni, and head back to Plakias for dinner. The coves and services may be crowded or limited outside peak season; dinner at a taverna is typically around 18–30 € per person.

Day 2 – Kourtaliotiko, monastery and the palm groves of Preveli

08:30–19:30 Active, with walks and elevation gain

Explore the river landscape of Kourtaliotiko and Preveli, allowing time for both the cultural visit and the trail down to the beach.

08:30

Departure from Plakias

Have breakfast and drive toward the gorge: the trip usually takes about 20–30 minutes, depending on which access point you choose. Bring water, a hat, and shoes with good grip; a light breakfast can cost 5–9 €.

09:15

Kourtaliotiko Gorge

Stop at the viewpoints accessible from the road and take in the rock walls and the watercourse at the bottom of the gorge. Access and walking options may depend on works, weather, and trail conditions; allow 1–1.5 hours and do not descend onto unmarked sections.

11:00

Moni Preveli

Reach the monastery by car and visit the areas open to visitors, with an eye to its religious history and the memory of Cretan resistance. Respectful clothing is required; any entrance contribution is typically around 3–5 €, and opening hours should be checked on site.

12:30

Lunch break in the Preveli area

Stop at a taverna along the route or have a packed lunch before heading down. For a simple meal, budget around 12–22 € per person; bring enough water with you, as services on the beach may be limited.

14:00

Descent to Preveli Beach

From the scenic parking area, reach the beach via the path and steps: the descent takes about 20–30 minutes, and the climb back up can be more demanding. Access to the beach is generally free; parking may cost around 2–5 €.

16:30

Palm grove and river mouth

Take your time exploring the mouth of the Megas Potamos and the palm grove, without leaving the marked paths. In high season there may be small boats or paid services, but availability and prices vary; avoid leaving any litter in the natural area.

18:00

Return and dinner in Plakias

Head back up to the parking area, return to Plakias in about 25–35 minutes, and save sunset as a moment to relax on the seafront. A full taverna dinner costs roughly 18–30 € per person.

Day 3 – Spili and the Triopetra coast

09:00–20:00 Moderate, between village and coast

Discover the mountain center of Spili and spend the afternoon at the beach and among the rock formations of Triopetra.

09:00

Departure for Spili

Drive from Plakias inland for about 25–35 minutes along a scenic road with curves. Have breakfast before leaving or stop in town; for coffee and a snack, budget about 5–10 €.

09:45

Lion Fountain of Spili

Reach the central fountain, known for the many spouts carved in the shape of lion heads, and stroll through the village streets. The visit is free and takes about 45–60 minutes; respect the fountain's use by locals.

11:00

Free time and a snack in Spili

Stop at a café or local shop and taste Cretan products, such as honey or cheese. A snack costs roughly 5–12 €; bring cash for small expenses, even if not all businesses accept cards.

12:30

Transfer and lunch toward Triopetra

Head to the coast with about 30–40 minutes of driving and have lunch at a taverna in the area, if open, or with a packed meal prepared in advance. Allow roughly 15–25 € per person for a taverna lunch.

14:00

Triopetra Beach

Spend the afternoon on the beach, named for the three large rock formations rising from the water. The shoreline is wide and partly exposed to the wind: access is free, while sunbeds and an umbrella, when available, may cost around 8–15 €.

17:30

Coastal stroll and return

Wrap up with a walk along the shore or a stop for sunset, then head back to Plakias in about 35–45 minutes. Check your fuel before setting off and plan dinner for when you return, with an estimated spend of 18–30 € per person.

Practical tips

  • Rent a compact car and check insurance coverage, excess, and conditions for secondary roads; in southern Crete, buses can be infrequent.
  • Bring water, sunscreen, and suitable shoes: the climb back from Preveli is steep and the beaches can have pebbles or rocky seabeds.
  • Check wind, sea conditions, and trail conditions before you go; access and services at beaches and gorges can vary throughout the year.
  • Respect the dress code in religious sites and do not leave litter in the gorges, in the Preveli palm grove, or on the beaches.
