One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
In southern Crete, Agios Vasileios brings together spectacular gorges, beaches with crystal-clear waters, and villages where life moves to the rhythm of the island. Between walks in nature and stops by the sea, the area offers memorable views and an authentic atmosphere.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
Overlooking the sea, this historic Orthodox monastery is made up of two complexes, the best known of which is Moni Piso Preveli. A visit offers a glimpse into the island’s religious history and sweeping views of the coast.
Famous for its lagoon and the palm grove crossed by the Megas Potamos River, it is one of the most scenic beaches in Crete. It can be reached by a walk downhill or by boat and invites you to pause in a truly unique natural setting.
A long stretch of sand and pebbles extends beside the lively village of Plakias, with plenty of space for swimming and relaxing. Along the waterfront, you’ll find tavernas and cafés perfect for a stop after the beach.
This sheltered bay is valued for its clear waters and seabed ideal for snorkeling. The coastline alternates between organized sections and quieter corners, with a beautiful mountain backdrop.
The beach takes its name from the three large rocks rising from the sea near the shore. Spacious and less developed, it is an atmospheric place to enjoy the sunset and the wilder side of the southern coast.

Getting around
To explore the Agios Vassilios area, from inland villages to coastal spots like Plakias, having a car is the most practical option. The roads are often winding and travel times can be longer than the distance suggests. Buses connect some places with Rethymno, but services can be infrequent, especially outside the high season. Check updated timetables before setting off, and consider a taxi for short trips. In summer, head to the best-known beaches in the morning to make parking easier.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for combining beaches, walks, and village visits, with temperatures generally milder than in summer. From June to September the weather is warmer and the days are perfect for the sea, but July and August are the busiest months. In spring the landscape is especially green; in autumn the sea often remains pleasant for swimming. In winter, some activities and facilities may have reduced hours.
Where to eat
In the tavernas of the inland villages, you can try Cretan dishes such as lamb, grilled meats, local cheeses, and seasonal vegetables. Along the coast, especially in Plakias, it is easier to find fish and seafood, as well as options suited to a lunch after the beach. Look for places frequented by locals too, and ask what the daily specials are: availability depends on the season. For dinner in the summer months, booking ahead can be useful in the busiest spots.
Quick tips
- 01Bring water and sunscreen with you, especially during hikes and in the hottest hours.
- 02Check bus timetables in advance: services can vary between high and low season.
- 03On mountain roads, drive carefully and allow extra time for bends and scenic stops.
- 04Before visiting more isolated beaches, check sea conditions and bring everything you need.
