Day 1 – First encounter with Agios Nikolaos

10:00–20:30 Gentle walks

Get your bearings in the center and enjoy the waterfront at a leisurely pace.

10:00

Lake Voulismeni

Start at the lake, the city’s scenic heart, and follow the panoramic path along its shores. Set aside about 45 minutes for views of the basin and the perched houses; the walk is free.

In the morning, the light is pleasant for photos and the lakeside promenade is less crowded.

11:00

Cathedral of Agia Triada

Walk to the cathedral, about 10–15 minutes from the lake, to admire the architecture and interior decorative details. Admission is generally free; check the opening hours on site and respect any religious services.

It’s a short stop: about 20–30 minutes.

12:00

Walk to Agios Nikolaos Marina

Follow the marina and the waterfront, pausing to watch the boats and the shape of the bay. The route is free and takes about 45 minutes, with plenty of cafés for a break.

For lunch at the taverna, budget around 15–25 EUR per person.

15:30

Swimming at Kitroplateia Beach

After lunch, head to this small city beach for a swim and some time by the shore. Access is free; sunbeds and umbrellas, if available, may cost around 10–20 EUR per couple.

Bring reef sandals: in some spots, the water entry is pebbly.

18:00

Ammos Beach and a sunset stroll

Continue along the coast to Ammos Beach, a good spot for a relaxed break before heading back toward the center. The beach is free and can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes from Kitroplateia; end the day with dinner along the seafront, around 20–35 EUR per person.

The availability of beach services depends on the season.

Day 2

Elounda, Plaka, and the island of Spinalonga

08:30–19:30 Day trip

Discover the Spinalonga peninsula, alternating between history, villages, and sea.

08:30

Transfer to Elounda

Reach Elounda from Agios Nikolaos in about 20–25 minutes by car, or by bus when the service is running. Stroll around the harbor and seafront for about an hour; the visit is free.

If you don't have a car, check the bus frequency and schedules in advance.

09:45

Boarding for Spinalonga from Plaka

Continue by car or taxi to Plaka, about 10–15 minutes from Elounda, and check boat departures to the island. The crossing is short; the boat ticket costs around 10–15 EUR, to which the entrance ticket to the site may be added, depending on the season and visit arrangements.

In high season, book ahead or arrive early: sailings and the visit depend on the weather.

10:30

Visit to Spinalonga

Allow about two hours for the Venetian bastions, the inner streets, and the buildings tied to the island’s history, including its role as a leper colony in the 20th century. The route is largely outdoors and includes uneven stretches; bring water and sun protection.

Check the updated entrance fee and opening hours on site.

13:15

Lunch in Plaka

Head back to Plaka and stop at a seaside taverna for fish, salads, and Cretan dishes. Expect to spend around 20–35 EUR per person, depending on your choices and drinks.

A relaxed lunch lets you enjoy the view toward Spinalonga without adding another transfer.

15:00

Kolokytha Beach

Make your way to the Kolokytha peninsula for a swim in a sheltered bay, with a mix of road access and, in some sections, a walk. The beach has no guaranteed facilities and access is free; allow at least an hour and a half for walking and time on the beach.

Bring water, suitable shoes, and everything you need: don’t count on shops or shade.

18:00

Return to Agios Nikolaos

Drive back toward Agios Nikolaos in about 25–35 minutes, with a short scenic stop along the way if the light is good. For dinner in town, budget roughly 18–30 EUR per person.

The return trip can take longer during summer traffic.

Day 3 – Kritsa and the ancient city of Lato

09:00–18:30 Culture and walks

Explore the religious and archaeological heritage in the inland area near Agios Nikolaos.

09:00

Transfer to Panagia Kera

Reach Panagia Kera in about 15–20 minutes by car; the site is on the road to Kritsa and is an easy stop to fit into your itinerary. Allow 45–60 minutes to visit the medieval frescoes, with an indicative entrance fee of a few euros.

Opening hours may be reduced in the low season: check before you go.

10:30

Kritsa

Continue for a few minutes to the village and wander through its lanes, shops, and little squares. Set aside about an hour for the visit and perhaps enjoy a coffee or pick up a small handmade souvenir; costs depend on your choices.

The roads in the center are hilly and partly cobbled.

12:00

Lunch in the village

Stop at a taverna in Kritsa to sample Cretan dishes such as local cheeses, vegetables, and grilled meat. A simple lunch costs around 15–25 EUR per person.

Ask which ingredients are in season: the menu changes between summer and winter.

14:00

Archaeological site of Lato

Reach Lato in about 10–15 minutes by car and walk through the site among the ruins of the ancient city, its gates, and public spaces, with beautiful views over the hills. Allow 1–2 hours and an indicative entrance ticket of 4–8 EUR; the ground is uneven.

Closed shoes, a hat, and water are especially useful in the warmer months.

16:30

Return and evening in Agios Nikolaos

Head back to town in about 20 minutes and leave time for a break at the hotel before your evening stroll. For dinner in the center, budget around 20–35 EUR per person.

If you’re traveling without a car, check the connections in advance: services to inland sites can be limited.

Day 4

Sitia, Toplou and the Vai coast

07:30–20:30 Long drive excursion

Reach the easternmost tip of Crete and discover the coast, monastery, and local history.

07:30

Departure for Sitia

Set off early: from Agios Nikolaos to Sitia the drive takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes, depending on traffic and road conditions. Take a short coffee break on arrival and stroll along the waterfront; fuel costs depend on the vehicle and route.

The drive is scenic but winding in places: plan your stops and take it easy.

09:30

Kazarma Fortress

Visit the Venetian fortress that overlooks the center of Sitia and enjoy the view over the harbor. Allow about 45–60 minutes; entry, if required, costs a few euros and opening hours may vary.

If it’s closed, enjoy the views from outside and from the old town.

11:00

Toplou Monastery

Reach the monastery in about 20–25 minutes by car. Set aside around an hour for the buildings, courtyard, and the collections open to visitors; entry may be charged, typically 3–8 EUR, and you should respect the site’s dress code.

Check the opening hours before your visit: there may be breaks or restrictions during services.

13:00

Vai Palm Forest

Continue for about 15 minutes to Vai beach, famous for its palm grove stretching almost down to the sea. Parking may cost around 2–5 EUR, and sunbeds or umbrellas, if desired, come at an additional cost; allow two hours for swimming and a walk.

Follow the marked trails and do not leave the permitted areas of the palm grove.

15:30

Ancient Itanos

A short distance from Vai, explore the archaeological remains of Itanos and the nearby coves, bearing in mind that the site is outdoors and without continuous services. Access is generally free; allow about an hour and bring water.

Do not collect fragments and respect the archaeological areas, even if they are unguarded.

17:00

Return to Agios Nikolaos

Start the return journey, which may take about 1 hour and 45 minutes or more. If you prefer a less intense day, skip a long beach stop and leave Vai with enough of a buffer before sunset.

Plan on a simple dinner when you get back; a meal in town costs around 18–30 EUR per person.

Day 5 – Ierapetra and the trip to Chrissi

07:00–20:30 Sea and transfers

Get to know the southern coast and spend the day on the island of Chrissi, if accessible.

07:00

Transfer to Ierapetra

Reach Ierapetra in about 50–60 minutes by car from Agios Nikolaos, or check the available bus options. An early-morning departure helps coordinate with any boat excursions to Chrissi, which are seasonal and subject to sea conditions.

Check in advance whether landings and routes on the island are permitted on the date of your trip.

08:15

Ierapetra Venetian Fortress

Before boarding, take a short walk near the Venetian fortress and along the seafront. Allow 30–45 minutes; access to the exterior is free, while indoor spaces may have varying opening hours and arrangements.

If you’ve booked an early boat, move the fortress visit to the way back.

09:00

Boat excursion to Chrissi Island

Board from Ierapetra only with an active, authorized service. The crossing usually takes less than an hour; the boat fare is typically 25–40 EUR per person, but it can vary depending on the season, operator, and access rules.

Chrissi is a protected area: respect local rules, don’t leave any litter, and don’t assume you’ll be allowed to disembark.

10:00

Time on the island and return

If landing is allowed, follow only the authorized paths and plan your visit independently between a walk and a swim. Bring water, food, sun protection, and suitable shoes; the availability of facilities and the length of the stop depend on the operator and the regulations in force.

If access to Chrissi isn’t available, stay in Ierapetra and choose an authorized beach on the coast.

16:00

Koutsounari Long Beach

After returning to Ierapetra, drive to Koutsounari in about 15–20 minutes for a break by the shore. Beach access is free; facilities, sun loungers, and umbrellas may involve indicative costs of 10–20 EUR per couple.

If the boat comes back late or the sea is rough, skip this stop and return at your own pace.

18:00

Return to Agios Nikolaos

Head back to base in about an hour by car, leaving some margin for traffic and a short stop along the way. For dinner, allow an approximate budget of 18–30 EUR per person.

This day depends the most on weather, sea connections, and environmental regulations.

Day 6 – Malia, Sissi and the Milatos Cave

09:00–19:00 Archaeology and coast

Combine an important Minoan site with three relaxed stops on the northeastern coast.

09:00

Malia Palace

Reach the Minoan palace of Malia in about 30–35 minutes by car. Follow the route through courtyards, storerooms, and the complex’s chambers; allow around 1.5–2 hours and expect an indicative ticket price of 6–12 EUR, to be checked before your visit.

The site is exposed to the sun: a hat and water are essential in summer.

11:30

Stop and stroll in Sissi

Continue for about 15 minutes to Sissi, a small harbor village where you can wander along the port and stop for a coffee. The visit is free and takes about an hour; for a simple break, budget 4–8 EUR.

The tavernas by the harbor are a convenient option for lunch without straying far from the coast.

13:00

Lunch in Sissi

Stop at a taverna for a relaxed meal with local produce and fish, if available. Plan on roughly 18–30 EUR per person; prices vary depending on the menu and drink choices.

In high season, it may be useful to arrive before the busiest time.

15:00

Milatos Cave

From Sissi, continue inland for about 15–20 minutes to reach the cave area. The visit takes around 45–60 minutes; access is generally free, but the terrain is uneven and lighting can be limited.

Wear shoes with good grip and do not enter unsafe or inaccessible sections.

16:30

Return to Agios Nikolaos

Head back to town in about 35–45 minutes, depending on the road and traffic. Leave the late afternoon for a break or a stroll in the center; for dinner, budget roughly 20–35 EUR per person.

If you don’t want to visit the cave, you can extend your beach stop in Sissi.

Day 7 – Mochlos, Gournia and Mirabello Gulf

09:00–19:00 A balanced day between villages and the sea

End the trip with a coastal village, a Minoan site, and a swim near your base.

09:00

Mochlos

Head east by car and reach Mochlos in about 35–45 minutes. Stroll around the small harbor and the tavernas overlooking the sea; the village visit is free and takes about an hour.

Access to the archaeological islet offshore depends on sea conditions, available boats, and local conditions.

10:30

Scenic stop and transfer to Gournia

Continue along the coastal road toward Gournia, allowing about 25–35 minutes. The route offers views over the gulf and crosses stretches of countryside; drive carefully and plan to stop only in safe areas.

The cost of this transfer depends on fuel and the vehicle used.

11:15

Gournia

Visit the Minoan site, often described as an ancient urban center with narrow streets, houses, and public spaces. Allow about 1–1.5 hours and expect a ticket of around 4–8 EUR; opening hours may vary by season.

Much of the visit is outdoors and without shade: bring water and a hat.

13:00

Lunch in the Pachia Ammos area

Stop at a taverna along the coast for a simple lunch before heading to Istro. Budget roughly 15–25 EUR per person; the choice of venues and opening hours depends on the season.

Ask in advance whether the kitchen is still open: some places shorten their hours outside summer.

15:00

Voulisma Beach

Wrap up with a swim at Voulisma Beach, near Istro and about a 20–25-minute drive from Gournia. Access is free; sunbeds and umbrellas may cost roughly 10–20 EUR per pair, while parking can be limited during busy periods.

The sea is often clear, but conditions change: check the waves before you go in.

17:30

Return and final evening

Head back to Agios Nikolaos in about 15–20 minutes and spend the evening on a stroll or a final dinner in the center. For a full meal, budget around 20–35 EUR per person.

If you’re leaving the next morning, pack your bags before heading out.

Practical tips

  • For Kritsa, Lato, Sitia, Ierapetra and the beaches outside the city, a car makes getting around much more flexible; drive carefully on winding roads and allow extra time in high season.
  • Excursions to Spinalonga and Chrissi depend on ferry schedules and sea conditions: check services and any environmental restrictions before planning your day.
  • For archaeological sites, caves and beaches, always bring water, a hat, sunscreen and suitable shoes; many places are exposed and have limited facilities.
  • Check the opening hours of churches, monasteries and archaeological sites before departure: they may change between the summer and winter seasons, on public holidays or when services are being held.
