Getting around
The center of Aghios Nikolaos is compact and easy to explore on foot, between , the harbor, and the shopping streets. KTEL buses connect the town with Heraklion and other places in the region, but frequencies and timetables can vary depending on the season. To explore beaches and villages nearby, such as Elounda, a rental car offers greater flexibility. Taxis are also available in the center; in high season, take traffic and parking difficulties into account.
When to go
From May to June and from September to October, the climate is generally pleasant, the sea is suitable for swimming, and it is less crowded than in the height of summer. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, with greater demand for accommodation and services. In winter the town is quieter and some tourist activities may have reduced hours.
Where to eat
The taverns are concentrated around , the harbor, and the streets of the center: for a quieter atmosphere, just move away from the busiest stretches along the seafront. Look for Cretan dishes such as dakos, kalitsounia, and grilled meats, as well as the catch of the day when available. Local olive oil often takes center stage; ask which specialties are prepared in-house and check the price of the fish before ordering.
