1 day · Baixa, Chiado, Alfama, views, cuisine
The day follows a walking route from the Baixa riverside toward Chiado and then uphill to Alfama, minimizing transfers and concentrating the sightseeing in the historic center. Between monumental squares, Gothic ruins, and narrow lanes, you'll also have time for a lunch break and a Portuguese dinner. The route includes uphill stretches and uneven paving: comfortable shoes are essential. Fees and opening hours may change, so check the latest information for your travel date.

Discover Lisbon’s historic heart on foot, from the squares of Baixa to the viewpoints of Alfama.
10:00
Praça do Comércio and riverside
Start beneath the arcades of Praça do Comércio, overlooking the Tagus, and admire the symmetry of the square rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Pass through the Arco da Rua Augusta and stroll leisurely along the pedestrian street toward the city center; the walk takes about 15 minutes. Access to the square is free.
Morning light is ideal for photographing the square and the river.
11:00
Elevador de Santa Justa
Admire the neo-Gothic structure of Santa Justa from the outside. As of the October 2026 check, Carris reports the elevator is temporarily closed: reach Largo do Carmo on foot via Chiado, without planning on taking the cabin ride or accessing the miradouro. Check the operator’s updates before traveling.
The route to Largo do Carmo is uphill; check the Carris website for any reopening notices.
12:00
Convento do Carmo
Reach Largo do Carmo on foot through Chiado and visit the convent ruins. Allow about 45–60 minutes for the roofless nave and the small archaeological museum, pausing to take in the traces of the earthquake that left the church partially destroyed. Admission is paid, typically 5–8 € for an adult.
Check the schedule: opening hours may vary on public holidays.
13:15
Lunch in Chiado
Head down toward Chiado and choose a tasca or a restaurant on the side streets, where you can find daily specials, soups, cod, and vegetarian options. Allow around 60–75 minutes to eat at a relaxed pace; a simple lunch can cost roughly 12–20 € per person, drinks not included. After lunch, enjoy a short stroll among the bookshops and historic façades of the neighborhood.
In the busiest places, ask whether the bread and appetizers brought to the table are charged separately.
15:00
Walk to Alfama and Castelo de São Jorge
Reach Castelo de São Jorge on foot: from Chiado, allow about 25–35 minutes, with uphill stretches and cobblestones; alternatively, a taxi or transport service can reduce the effort, with the cost varying. At the castle, visit the battlements and courtyards and allow at least 90 minutes for the views over the rooftops and the Tagus. Admission is roughly in the 15–20 € range per adult.
Bring water and shoes with good grip: some sections are steep and uneven.
17:30
Miradouro das Portas do Sol
From the castle, walk down for about 10–15 minutes to the Portas do Sol viewpoint, a panoramic terrace overlooking the rooftops of Alfama and the river. Stop to admire the neighborhood from above and, if you like, wander a few nearby alleys without going too far: the streets are steep and easy to explore at a leisurely pace. Access to the viewpoint is free.
In the late afternoon the viewpoint is very busy; for a quieter break, move along the nearby streets.
19:30
Dinner in Alfama
End the day in a tasca in Alfama with Portuguese specialties such as grilled sardines, bacalhau, or daily specials; an informal dinner costs roughly 18–35 € per person, drinks not included. If you want to listen to fado, book in advance and check whether the venue applies a surcharge or a fixed menu: in that case, the cost can rise significantly. Return with a downhill walk to the Baixa, or take a taxi if you’re tired.
For fado, choose a place that clearly states dinner prices and conditions.
