Belém Tower
A symbol of Lisbon and a masterpiece of Manueline architecture, the tower stands on the banks of the Tagus. Its decorations evoke the era of Portugal’s great explorations.
Lisbon captivates with the rhythm of its trams, buildings covered in azulejos, and the miradouros overlooking the Tagus. Between imposing monuments and lively squares, every walk reveals a new view of the Portuguese capital.
A symbol of Lisbon and a masterpiece of Manueline architecture, the tower stands on the banks of the Tagus. Its decorations evoke the era of Portugal’s great explorations.
This magnificent Manueline monastery shelters richly decorated cloisters and important tombs, including that of Vasco da Gama. It is one of the most representative monuments of Portugal’s maritime history.
From its medieval walls, you can admire a splendid view over the rooftops and the river. Walking among towers, courtyards, and archaeological remains allows you to retrace the city’s different eras.
Overlooking the Tagus, this vast square is framed by elegant arcaded buildings and the Rua Augusta Arch. It is one of the most scenic places to begin a stroll through the historic center.
This iron elevator, decorated with neo-Gothic elements, was built to connect Baixa with Carmo. As of the October 2026 inspection, Carris reports the service and the miradouro temporarily closed: admire the structure from the outside and check for updates before traveling.
Lisbon’s cathedral, with its imposing Romanesque façade, is one of the city’s oldest religious buildings. It stands in the heart of Alfama, among steep streets and distinctive views.

Lisbon is easy to get around by metro, tram, bus and train, but the hills and cobbled streets often make walking tiring. From the airport, the metro is a convenient link to the city center; for some areas, buses or taxis are better options. Consider a rechargeable travel card for public transport and check updated fares and purchase options before you go. The busiest trams, such as 28, can be crowded: keep an eye on your bags and wallets.
Spring and autumn are generally the most pleasant times, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds than in summer. In July and August it can get very hot and the best-known attractions are often busy; book ahead if you are traveling in peak season. Winter is generally mild, but it can be rainy: bring a raincoat and shoes suitable for hills.
To sample the local cuisine, look for tascas and small neighborhood restaurants: typical dishes include bacalhau, grilled sardines and caldo verde. Belém is famous for pastéis de nata, but you can find excellent pastries in other bakeries around the city too. In the most popular places, especially in the evening and at weekends, it’s advisable to book; check the menu and prices before sitting down.
