3 days / 2 nights · City, sea, archaeology, Olympus

Katerini is a practical base for discovering, in just a few days, the urban character of Pieria, the beaches of the Thermaic Gulf, and the landscapes at the foot of Olympus. The first day is devoted to the town center, best explored on foot; the second follows the coastline of Paralia and Olympiaki Akti. The third combines the archaeological site and museum of Dion with Litochoro, the gateway to the Olympus massif. 09:30–20:30 Easy walks

Get your bearings in central Katerini and discover its public spaces and everyday rhythm.

09:30

Walk to Katerini Municipal Park

Start your visit in the city’s main green space, best enjoyed in the cooler hours and easily reached on foot from the center. Set aside about an hour for the paths and shaded areas; admission to the park is generally free.

Bring water, especially in the summer months.

11:00

Eleftherias Square and pedestrian center

Head to the central square on foot and watch the flow of people among cafés, shops and commercial streets. It’s a good place to orient yourself and take a short break; a Greek coffee or espresso costs around €2–4.

12:00

Visit to the Church of the Divine Ascension

Go inside the church if it is open and visit respectfully, observing any services and dress requirements. Allow about 20–30 minutes; admission is usually free, while ceremonies may limit tourist visits.

13:00

Lunch in a tavern in the city center

Choose a tavern in the central streets to sample Greek dishes and local specialties, such as souvlaki or regional cheeses. For a simple meal, budget around €12–20 per person, drinks excluded.

15:00

Strolling through the shopping streets

Spend the afternoon on the downtown streets, alternating independent shops with shaded breaks. Distances are short and easy to cover on foot; allow about 1–2 hours without any obligation to buy.

18:30

Aperitif and dinner in the center of Katerini

Head back to the square area for an aperitif and a relaxed dinner, when the streets come alive with the evening stroll. A tavern dinner can cost roughly €15–25 per person, depending on dishes and drinks.

Day 2 – Paralia and Olympiaki Akti: a day by the sea

09:00–20:00 Relaxed pace, with short transfers

Enjoy the Pieria coastline by alternating beach time, a walk along the seafront, and food stops.

09:00

Transfer from Katerini to Paralia

Reach Paralia Katerinis by local bus, taxi, or car: the journey is short, but frequency and travel times vary by season. Plan on roughly €2–5 for the bus, or a higher cost for a taxi, to be agreed in advance or checked before departure.

Check the return times if you are traveling by bus.

09:45

Morning on Paralia Katerinis Beach

Choose a stretch of beach for swimming or for a walk along the Thermaic Gulf. Some areas offer paid services and sunbeds: budget roughly €8–18 for a set, with prices and availability depending on the season.

11:30

Seafront promenade and Agia Fotini Church

Follow the seafront promenade to Agia Fotini Church, one of the town’s landmarks. Visit it from the outside or go in if the doors are open; allow about 30 minutes and behave respectfully during services.

13:00

Seafood lunch in Paralia

Stop at a seaside taverna or in the streets just behind the beach, where the choice is wide. A lunch with a main dish and drink costs roughly €15–28 per person; ask the price of fish sold by weight before ordering.

15:30

Stroll and a break on the seafront

Take some time for a coffee and a walk among the town’s shops and ice cream parlors. The central stretch is easy to explore on foot and requires no tickets; a sweet break usually costs about €3–7.

17:00

Afternoon at Olympic Beach

Head to Olympiaki Akti, also known as Olympic Beach, by taxi, car, or local connection when available. The beach has a different, quieter atmosphere outside peak times; expect about €2–6 for the bus transfer and check seasonal schedules.

19:00

Return and dinner on the coast

Head back to Paralia for a seaside dinner or return directly to Katerini if you prefer an evening in town. Plan on roughly €15–25 per person for a simple dinner and leave some room for the return journey.

Day 3 – Dion and Litochoro, between archaeology and Mount Olympus

08:30–19:00 Active day with car transfers

Explore the Macedonian sanctuary of Dion and finish in Litochoro, at the gateway to Olympus National Park.

08:30

Departure for Dion

From Katerini, reach Dion by car or taxi; the journey is about 15–20 km and usually takes 20–30 minutes, depending on traffic. Local buses can be an alternative, but it is wise to check frequencies and connections in advance.

09:00

Archaeological Park of Dion

Allow about two hours for the vast archaeological site, among urban remains, mosaics, baths, and sacred places set in the landscape at the foot of Olympus. The route is outdoors and includes uneven sections; admission may have an indicative fee of around €6–12, which should be checked before visiting.

Wear comfortable shoes and bring a hat and water.

11:15

Sanctuary of Isis

Inside the archaeological area, make your way to the sanctuary dedicated to Isis and observe the layout of the sacred spaces and architectural remains. Allow 30–45 minutes and note that the visit is normally included with park admission, without needing to buy a separate ticket.

12:00

Archaeological Museum of Dion

Visit the museum to put the site’s artifacts and mosaics into context, with rooms dedicated to the city’s history and its sanctuaries. Plan on about an hour; the entrance fee, if any, may vary and should be checked along with opening hours, which are often seasonal.

13:30

Lunch in Dion

Stop at a local taverna for a simple meal before heading on to Litochoro. Expect roughly €12–20 per person; in the low season, some places may have reduced hours.

15:00

Litochoro town center and Olympus National Park Information Centre

Drive to Litochoro and stroll through the center, among narrow lanes, small squares, and mountain views. If open, step into the Olympus National Park Information Centre to get oriented on the trails and mountain conditions; admission is generally free, but opening hours should be checked.

17:00

Holy Monastery of Saint Dionysios of Olympus

Continue by car to the monastery, checking road conditions and visiting hours in advance; the drive from Litochoro town center can take about 20–30 minutes. Focus the visit on the accessible areas and the mountain setting, and dress respectfully; any donations are optional.

Practical tips

  • In summer, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen: the archaeological site of Dion is large and mostly exposed to the sun.
  • For Dion and the monastery, consider a rental car or a taxi; check local bus schedules, which may be less frequent out of season.
  • Check opening hours and ticket prices in advance for the Dion site and museum, the visitor center, and the monastery, as these are subject to seasonal changes.
  • At Paralia and Olympic Beach, beach services vary depending on the time of year: ask the cost of sunbeds and umbrellas before you settle in.
