THE PLACES THAT TELL ZITSA

Worth seeing, worth remembering.

Monastery of Prophet Elijah of Zitsa

Head to this historic monastery to enjoy the peace and the views over the surrounding mountains. It is one of the most representative religious sites in the area around the village.

The winery is a benchmark of local viticulture and lets you discover the wines of the area, including Zitsa’s famous sparkling wine. Check availability and tasting arrangements in advance.

Central Square of Zitsa

This is the heart of the town, ideal for a break among the traditional houses and for watching everyday village life. Nearby, you’ll find cafés and tavernas where you can sample Epirus cuisine.

Church of Saint George of Zitsa

The parish church is a quiet stop for appreciating the local religious tradition and the atmosphere of the historic center. Include it in a stroll through the village’s narrow lanes.

This site, linked to the course of the Kalamas and to the natural formation that once served as a bridge, offers a striking landscape. The natural arch collapsed in 2018: today, the visit focuses mainly on the river area and its surroundings.

Kalamas Valley near Zitsa

From the outskirts of the village, views open onto the valley and the hills of Epirus, especially beautiful in the morning light or late afternoon. It is a pleasant stop for those who like exploring rural landscapes on foot or by car.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

To reach Zitsa and explore the surrounding area, a car is the most convenient option: from Ioannina, you travel along mountain roads with bends and variable journey times. Getting around the village itself is easy on foot, but to discover the nearby villages and landscapes it helps to have your own vehicle. Regional buses can be infrequent, especially on weekends and outside the high season. Before you set off, check the latest timetables and connections with the Ioannina bus station.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are ideal for strolling through the hills and visiting the wine-growing area; in autumn, the grape harvest can make a stay especially interesting. Summer brings days suited to excursions, but it’s best to set off early to avoid the hottest hours. In winter, the weather can be cold and rainy: check the forecast and road conditions before you travel.

Where to eat

The tavernas in the village and nearby are the right place to sample traditional Epirus cuisine, with characteristic meats, cheeses, and savory pies. Zitsa is also known for its wine production: ask which local labels are available and, if you’re interested in a tasting, check opening hours and reservations in advance. During quieter periods, some venues may have reduced hours, so it’s wise to verify before going.

Quick tips

  1. If you’re traveling by car, drive carefully: mountain roads can be narrow and winding.
  2. Check bus times before departure and don’t rely on frequent connections.
  3. Bring comfortable shoes and a light jacket even in summer, especially for evening walks.
  4. For wine tastings or vineyard visits, contact the wineries in advance and ask whether booking is required.
