How to get around
To reach Zhangjiajie, you can arrive at Hehua Airport or Zhangjiajie West Railway Station, which is connected by high-speed trains. The city of Zhangjiajie and the Wulingyuan area, the main gateway to the forest park, are separate: factor in travel time and choose where to stay based on the sights you plan to visit. For transfers, you can use taxis, buses, or ride-hailing apps like DiDi, checking the destination in Chinese characters. Inside the park, getting around is mainly done on the shuttle buses included with the ticket; cable cars and scenic elevators may require an extra fee. Distances and queues can lengthen travel times: set off early and check updated opening hours and access points.
When to go
Spring and autumn generally offer pleasant temperatures for walking, although mountain weather can change quickly. In summer the scenery is lush, but heat, humidity, rain, and crowds can make visits more demanding; in winter, some trails or services may be affected by weather conditions. If possible, avoid major Chinese holidays, when transport and attractions are especially busy. Bring layers and check the forecast before you leave.
Where to eat
In Wulingyuan and in central Zhangjiajie, you’ll find restaurants, casual eateries, and street stalls, with a good selection of local cuisine. Among the traditional Tujia specialties is sanxiaguo, a rustic stew that can be spicy; dishes with chili, smoked ingredients, and sweet-and-sour flavors are also common. Ask about the spice level and mention any allergies, ideally by showing a written translation in Chinese. Near the park entrances, the food options are convenient, but eating in the city or in Wulingyuan often gives you more choice.
