THE PLACES THAT TELL XIROMERO

Worth seeing, worth remembering.

Archaeological site of Oiniadai

The ruins of the ancient port city stand in a strategic position near the delta of the Acheloos. As you walk among the remains, it’s easy to imagine the city’s commercial importance and daily life in antiquity.

Ancient theater of Oiniadai

Part of the Oiniadai archaeological site, the theater still preserves the cavea and offers a striking glimpse into the city’s history. It is one of the most fascinating stops for anyone visiting the ruins.

Port of Astakos

The port is the maritime heart of Astakos, with fishing boats, pleasure craft, and tavernas along the waterfront. It’s a pleasant place for a stroll and to soak up the area’s coastal atmosphere.

Port of Mytikas

This quiet little harbor faces the Ionian Sea and offers lovely views of the nearby islands. The waterfront is ideal for a relaxing break after a day spent between beaches and countryside.

Lake Ozeros

Surrounded by rural scenery, the lake is a peaceful spot to observe nature and enjoy the silence of the inland landscape. Its shores offer a pleasant contrast to the Ionian coast of Xiromero.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

To explore Xiromero and reach the coastal areas, a car is the most convenient option: towns and beaches are far apart, and public transport connections can be infrequent. KTEL buses connect some locations in the region, but it’s best to check timetables and stops before setting off. For short trips in the villages, taxis are available, preferably booked in advance. Most roads are secondary, so drive carefully and allow for longer travel times than expected.

When to go

Spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting the area, with milder temperatures and pleasant scenery. Summer is the best season for the sea, but it can be very hot, especially around midday; book ahead if you’re traveling in high season. In spring and autumn, some tourist services may have reduced hours.

Where to eat

In towns such as Astakos and Mytikas, you’ll find tavernas and eateries serving traditional Greek cuisine. Along the coast, look for fish and seafood, while in inland villages meat dishes and local ingredients are common. Menus and availability can vary by season: ask about the daily specials and check opening hours, especially outside summer.

Quick tips

  1. Check bus schedules in advance and don’t rely on frequent connections between towns.
  2. In summer, bring water, sunscreen, and a hat, especially if you’re visiting poorly equipped beaches.
  3. Keep some cash on hand: in small businesses or more remote villages, card payments may not always be accepted.
  4. If you plan to dine at a very popular taverna during high season, call ahead to reserve.
