The metro is the most convenient way to get around the city’s main areas: it’s modern, clearly signposted, and also connects to the railway station. To reach the Terracotta Army, you can take a tourist bus or a coach from the station area; check schedules and departure points in advance. Buses and taxis are useful for routes not covered by the metro, but traffic can be heavy during rush hour. From the airport, you can get into the city by metro, bus, or an authorized taxi. Bring your passport with you, as it is required for some ticket purchases and checks.
Spring and autumn are generally the most pleasant times, with mild temperatures and conditions suitable for sightseeing on foot. Summer can be very hot and humid, while winter is cold and often dry. In spring, windy or dusty days can occur: check the forecast and bring layered clothing.
The Muslim Quarter is famous for its street food stalls and specialties such as yangrou paomo, a mutton soup with crumbled bread, and roujiamo, a stuffed sandwich. To try biangbiang noodles as well, look for restaurants popular with locals in the streets near the center. Markets and more popular spots can get very crowded, especially in the evening: choose a less busy time and check the ingredients if you have dietary requirements.
