Day 1 – Cave, village and church in Pramanta

10:00–21:00 Easy walks and short transfers

Discover three nearby places in the heart of Voria Tzoumerka, leaving time for a food break and an unhurried visit.

10:00

Anemotrypa Cave

Allow about 45–60 minutes for the cave, taking in the limestone formations, cavities and the effects of water on the underground landscape; follow the designated route and wear shoes with good grip. From the center of Pramanta, the drive takes around 5–10 minutes on a mountain road. Expect an approximate entrance fee of 3–6 € per person, to be checked before visiting.

Check official or local sources for access details and whether booking is required; do not assume the visit is available.

12:00

Pramanta

Reach the village in about 5–10 minutes by car and stroll for 1–2 hours through the center, lingering over the stone houses, mountain views and local shops. Plan a lunch break here with regional specialties: a simple meal can cost roughly 12–25 € per person, depending on your choice and the venue. In the afternoon, you can spend a bit more time on a short walk and a coffee before continuing on foot to the church.

Park in permitted spaces and keep in mind that some streets in the center can be narrow or steep.

16:00

Church of Agia Paraskevi

From the center of Pramanta, you can reach the church on foot in just a few minutes, allowing about 30–45 minutes to admire the building, its architectural details, and the peaceful atmosphere of the place. Dress respectfully and check on site for any access instructions, especially if services are taking place. Entry may be free or require a small donation: as a rough reference, allow 0–2 € per person.

A visit to a place of worship may be affected by religious services; check local information before planning your day around access.

Day 2 – Among the rocks, springs, and trails of Kalarites

10:00–21:00 Moderate, with short walks

Discover the rock-cut heritage and river landscape around Kalarites with limited travel.

10:00

Kipina Monastery

Reach the monastery by car and devote about 60–90 minutes to the visit: take in the building clinging to the rock face and the access passage carved into the mountain. The route may include steps and uneven surfaces; wear shoes with good grip and proceed carefully. As an indication, consider €0–5 for a possible donation or ticket, without assuming it is certain, and check the official website for updated information on access and costs.

Respectful clothing and a light jacket are useful; don’t rely on facilities or equipped parking unless you have verified them.

14:00

Kouiasa Springs

After the drive to the Kalarites area and a lunch break, spend about 2–3 hours on the hike to the springs and small waterfalls, including time for stops and photos. Follow the marked trail on site, observe the watercourse and any remains of traditional structures along the way; the ground can be slippery, especially near the water. Access to the trail does not necessarily require a ticket: consider €0–5 only as a guideline for possible local expenses and check the official conditions and instructions before setting out.

Bring water and lunch, or stop in Kalarites; plan to return before dark and avoid getting too close to wet edges.

Day 3

Kalarites and the trail to Syrrako

10:00–19:00 Moderate, with a challenging hike

Discover Kalarites and reach Syrrako on foot, then return to the starting point along the same route.

10:00

Kalarites

Reach the village by car, the most practical option for this day: the mountain roads are winding and the drive from Ioannina can take around 1 hour and 45 minutes or more, depending on the route and conditions. Set aside about 1 hour and 45 minutes for the stone alleys, traditional houses and viewpoints; allow for a coffee or snack break, around €3–10. Leave the car in the permitted spaces at the entrance to the village and wear shoes suitable for steep paving as well.

Before setting off, check the forecast, road conditions and parking availability; do not rely on public transport connections without confirming the times first.

12:00

Hiking trail to Syrrako

Follow the walking route between Kalarites and Syrrako: allow roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes–2 hours each way, plus stops and time to visit the destination village. The trail crosses mountainous terrain and may have uneven ground, steep sections or changing conditions; bring water, hiking shoes and a jacket, and consider the return hike before you start. Plan for a packed lunch break in Syrrako or along the way, around €5–12 for supplies purchased beforehand; access on the trail does not normally require an entrance fee, but check locally for any notices and conditions before hiking.

Starting from Kalarites and returning along the same route, set aside around 4–5 hours in total for the outbound walk, break and return; do not start if the weather or available daylight will not allow a safe return.

Day 4

Syrrako and the high elevations of Tzoumerka

10:00–21:00 Easy walks and scenic driving

Discovering the traditional architecture of Syrrako and reaching Baros Pass with suitable driving times and safety margins.

10:00

Syrrako

Spend around 2–3 hours exploring on foot the paved lanes, stone houses and views over the gorges and slopes of Tzoumerka; the inclines and uneven ground call for shoes with good grip. Leave the car in a permitted area on the edge of the village and consider a stop for coffee or a light lunch, around €5–15 per person; access to the village is generally a public walk, but any visits to specific facilities may have their own costs and opening hours. After the visit, allow around 1–2 hours of driving to Baros Pass, depending on the route and road conditions, leaving sufficiently early for the return.

Ask locally which road is passable: avoid tackling snowy, icy or vehicle-inappropriate sections.

15:30

Baros Pass

Reach the pass by car and allow 45–75 minutes to admire the high-altitude scenery, watch the ridgelines and make short photo stops only in safe lay-bys. Altitude and weather can change quickly: bring a warm layer and do not leave the road unless you know the terrain. No ticket is required for a simple scenic stop; instead, budget around €10–25 for fuel for the day’s journeys, varying according to vehicle and route. Set off again with enough daylight for the return, allowing about 2–3 hours of driving and a stop along the way if needed.

Before departure, check conditions, any restrictions and road accessibility with local sources or the relevant authorities; do not rely on satellite navigation alone.

Day 5 – Matsouki and Viliza Monastery

10:00–17:30 Relaxed walks and a mountain transfer

Discover the village of Matsouki and visit Viliza Monastery, while also taking time to enjoy the surrounding landscape.

10:00

Matsouki Village

Park in the available spaces at the entrance to the village and spend about two hours strolling among the stone houses, narrow lanes, and mountain views. Take it easy: the elevation and sloping ground make shoes with good grip more comfortable, while a coffee or snack stop may cost roughly €3–10. Before leaving the village, ask a local property what the condition of the route to the monastery is: access and travel times can vary.

Bring water and cash; facilities and food options may be limited.

13:00

Viliza Monastery

Reach the monastery from Matsouki following local directions: allow about 20–40 minutes for the transfer, but check whether the final stretch requires leaving the car and continuing on foot, as the road may be narrow or uneven. Set aside about 60–90 minutes to visit and take in the religious architecture and mountain setting; do not assume the interiors are accessible or open to visitors. For any opening times, access arrangements, and entrance fees, check the official website or local contacts in advance; allow roughly €0–5 for a possible offering or contribution. After the visit, stop for a packed lunch or head back to Matsouki for a simple meal, roughly €10–20, then allow enough time for the return journey.

Contact the monastery representatives in advance or ask for information in the village; avoid the route in bad weather or if the ground is slippery.

Day 6 – Waterfalls and stone architecture of Tzoumerka

09:00–17:00 Moderate, with short walks and a car transfer

Discover the Katarraktis waterfalls and Plaka Bridge, allowing realistic time for mountain travel.

09:00

Katarraktis Waterfalls

Reach the area by car and spend about 1–2 hours walking to the panoramic spots, choosing the route carefully based on the ground and stream conditions. Admire the waterfall and the wooded landscape: the water flow and appearance of the falls change significantly with the season and rainfall. Access to the natural area may not have an entrance fee, but check locally for any conditions, restrictions, or charges before your visit.

Wear shoes with good grip; after heavy rain avoid slippery sections and do not go too close to the edge or the watercourse.

13:00

Plaka Bridge

Allow about 45–60 minutes by car from the waterfalls, depending on the route and road conditions, and drive carefully on the mountain stretches. On site, set aside about 1–1.5 hours to admire the stone arch, the Arachthos River, and the details of the bridge reconstruction; for lunch, you can stop at a local taverna, budgeting about 12–25 € per person. The outdoor area can be visited on foot, while any services or activities may involve additional costs: check up-to-date information and access conditions in advance through official local sources.

Leave extra time for stops along the way and check road conditions before setting off; do not cross the river or get close to the water if the current is strong.

Day 7 – Arachthos and Agnanta

09:00–18:00 Active in the morning, relaxed in the afternoon

Go rafting on the Arachthos and end with a walking visit to Agnanta.

09:00

Rafting on the Arachthos River

Drive to the agreed meeting point with the operator, in the river area near Plaka Bridge or at another base indicated for the descent. Allow about 3–4 hours in total for the briefing, preparation, local transfers, and rafting: the route and duration depend on the water level and the day’s organization. Bring a swimsuit, towel, and a dry change of clothes; the approximate cost for the guided activity is about €35–€60 per person, to be confirmed directly with the operator.

Book in advance and check the operator’s official website for age requirements, included equipment, river conditions, and the exact meeting point.

14:00

Agnanta

From the rafting drop-off point, drive to Agnanta, allowing roughly 20–40 minutes depending on the base used and the road chosen. Spend about an hour strolling among the stone houses and village lanes; then stop for a late lunch at a taverna, with an estimated cost of €12–€25 per person. After lunch, you can enjoy a short scenic drive in the surrounding area before heading back.

Mountain roads can be narrow and winding: drive carefully and check in advance the availability and opening hours of local places.

Practical tips

  • If you're leaving from Ioannina, allow roughly 1 hour and 30 minutes or more to reach the Pramanta area, and leave with some extra time.
  • Mountain roads can be winding: drive carefully and check weather and road conditions before setting off.
  • Bring non-slip shoes and a warm layer: in the cave and at higher elevations, the temperature can be lower than in the valley below.
  • Check official websites or local contacts for any tickets, access rules, and visiting conditions; the times listed are only a suggested itinerary.
  • To reach both places with flexibility, plan the itinerary by car and check the condition of the mountain roads in advance.
  • Wear hiking shoes with grippy soles: the sections near the springs can be damp or slippery.
