THE PLACES THAT TELL TULUM

Worth seeing, worth remembering.

Tulum Archaeological Zone

The ruins of this Mayan port city rise on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea. El Castillo and the ancient walls make the site one of the region’s most scenic visits.

A short distance from the center, this cenote with its crystal-clear waters is perfect for swimming and snorkeling among limestone formations. Bring a mask and snorkel to spot fish and turtles.

A long stretch of pale sand and palm trees overlooking a sea of intense colors. It is one of Tulum’s most beloved beaches for relaxing and enjoying the Caribbean scenery.

Dos Ojos Cenote

A famous system of caves and freshwater pools, it is a much-loved destination for snorkeling and diving. The name means “two eyes” and refers to the two pools connected by underground passages.

Calavera Cenote

This cenote near Tulum is recognizable by the circular openings in the rock, which from above resemble a skull. You can climb down into the water using a ladder or jump in from the openings.

Muyil Archaeological Zone

Set amid lush vegetation, this ancient Mayan site is a gateway to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve. From the nearby trail and lookout tower, you can enjoy views of the jungle and the reserve’s landscapes.

BEFORE YOU GO

A well-planned trip.

Getting around

The center of Tulum and the beach hotel zone are several kilometers apart: to get around, you can use taxis, bikes, or colectivos, the shared minibuses that run along the main roads. A bicycle is convenient for short trips, but watch out for traffic and poorly lit streets. Taxis are practical, especially in the evening, but agree on the fare before setting off because prices can be high. A rental car gives you more freedom to visit cenotes and archaeological sites in the area, while keeping traffic and the limited availability of parking in mind.

When to go

The most pleasant period is generally from November to April, with warm weather and less rain; however, this coincides with high season, so it’s best to book ahead. From May to October, humidity and rainfall increase, and between June and November tropical storms or hurricanes can occur. The presence of sargassum on the beaches varies from year to year, especially in the warmer months: check local updates before you leave.

Where to eat

In the center, you’ll find taquerias, regional kitchens, and casual eateries where you can sample Yucatán specialties such as cochinita pibil and tacos. In the coastal area there are restaurants and cafés of every kind, often with higher prices than in town. To keep costs down, choose places frequented by locals too and check the menu and prices before ordering.

Quick tips

  1. Bring cash in pesos: not every small business accepts cards, and ATMs may charge fees.
  2. Agree on the taxi price in advance and ask whether the fare is per person or per ride.
  3. Use sunscreen and insect repellent; before entering a cenote, follow local instructions and rinse off if requested.
  4. To visit ruins and cenotes, set off early: you’ll avoid the hottest hours and often find fewer crowds.
