Getting around
The historic center of Trento is compact and easy to explore on foot. The railway station is just a short distance from and the main attractions. To get around the neighborhoods and the surrounding area, you can use the city bus network; the cable car connects the city to Sardagna and offers a beautiful view over the valley, but it’s advisable to check timetables and service before setting out. If you’re arriving by car, keep in mind that some areas of the center are subject to traffic restrictions and choose an outer parking area or a dedicated parking lot.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for visiting the city, with generally mild temperatures and plenty of opportunities for walks in the surrounding area as well. Summer is suitable for hiking, but it can be hot in the center; winter brings a special atmosphere, especially during the Christmas market period, when it’s best to expect more visitors. In every season, check the forecast if you’re planning mountain activities.
Where to eat
To sample Trentino cuisine, look for trattorias and osterias in the center serving canederli, strangolapreti, polenta and meat-based dishes, paired with local wines such as Teroldego or Marzemino. There’s no shortage of modern venues, pizzerias and cafés, especially in the streets around and Piazza Fiera. For a sweet break, try strudel or a slice of buckwheat cake.
