Getting around
On Tinos, Chora and the port are easy to explore on foot, but to discover the beaches and inland villages it’s useful to have a car or scooter. Buses connect the main town with some locations, but routes and frequencies can vary depending on the season. In summer, book a rental vehicle in advance, especially if you’re arriving in the busiest months. Roads to the villages are often narrow and winding: drive carefully and allow more time than expected.
When to go
From May to June and from September to early October you’ll find pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, ideal for visiting the villages and going on hikes. July and August are hotter and busier; the meltemi, the summer wind of the Cyclades, can make the sea rough and affect ferry connections. Tinos is a pilgrimage destination throughout the year, with particularly heavy crowds on 15 August.
Where to eat
In Chora you’ll find taverns and restaurants, while in the inland villages you can stop at quieter places, often serving home-style cooking. Look for island specialties such as louza, cured pork, sausage and local cheeses, as well as dishes with artichokes and capers. For a casual meal, try a bakery or pastry shop and ask which products are in season.
Quick tips
- 01In high season, book ferries and rental vehicles in advance; check for any updates before departure, especially when strong winds are blowing.
- 02Bring comfortable shoes and water for visiting the villages: the lanes are often cobbled and uphill.
- 03In towns and places of worship, choose respectful clothing; during the celebrations on 15 August expect large crowds.
- 04Check bus, shop and tavern opening times locally: outside the summer months, some services may be reduced.
Wake up in the right place.
