Raekoja plats is the heart of the Old Town, surrounded by historic facades and cafés. In the center of the square stands the Gothic town hall, one of Tallinn’s most recognizable landmarks.
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Tallinn combines the charm of the Middle Ages with a contemporary spirit, between the towers of the Old Town and the shores of the Baltic Sea. Strolling through historic squares, elegant palaces, and original museums, you’ll discover a compact capital full of personality.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
The castle stands on Toompea Hill and houses the Estonian Parliament. From the outside, you can spot the Pikk Hermann tower, closely tied to national history.
This Orthodox cathedral dominates Toompea Hill with its onion domes and richly decorated facade. It is one of the capital’s most striking buildings.
St. Olaf’s Church is famous for its tall spire, which for centuries served as a landmark for those arriving by sea. Its silhouette shapes the skyline of the Old Town.
This Baroque palace was built by Peter the Great for Catherine I and now houses the Kadriorg Art Museum. It is surrounded by an elegant park with gardens and tree-lined avenues.
Housed in the historic seaplane hangars, this maritime museum tells Estonia’s naval story through interactive exhibits. Among the most impressive pieces is the submarine Lembit.

A well-planned trip.
Getting around
Tallinn’s Old Town is easy to explore on foot, though the cobblestone streets make comfortable shoes a smart choice. To reach farther neighborhoods like Kadriorg or Kalamaja, you can use buses, trams, and trolleybuses. Tickets are bought via app, contactless card, or other authorized channels: check the latest options and validate your ticket according to the instructions. The airport is close to the city center and connected by public transport and taxis. In winter, allow extra time for getting around and watch out for snow and ice.
When to go
From May to September, the days are long and the weather is generally milder, making it ideal for strolling between the Old Town and the waterfront. July and August are the busiest months, so it’s wise to book ahead. Winter is cold and the days are short, but the markets and Christmas atmosphere make a December visit special. Spring and early autumn often offer a good balance of weather, crowds, and prices.
Where to eat
In the Old Town you’ll find restaurants and cafés where you can try Estonian dishes such as black bread, smoked fish, and game-based specialties. For a more contemporary atmosphere, explore the venues in Kalamaja and the creative district of Telliskivi. Markets and coffee shops are a practical choice for a casual meal, while it’s better to book at the most popular restaurants, especially on weekends. Check opening hours: some places close earlier than those in Italy’s larger cities.
Quick tips
- 01Wear shoes with non-slip soles: the paving stones can be slippery, especially when it rains or freezes.
- 02Bring a waterproof jacket even in summer, because the weather can change quickly.
- 03Check museum and restaurant opening hours, especially outside peak season.
- 04Use the euro and check your card’s fees in advance for payments abroad.
