Designed by Ernst Ziller, the town hall dominates with its impressive façade and marble staircase. It is one of the most representative examples of the city's neoclassical architecture.
Inaugurated in 1864, this elegant theater is inspired by famous European opera houses. A visit lets you admire the historic interiors and the central role the theater plays in the cultural life of Syros.
Also known as Agios Nikolaos or Saint Nicholas of the Rich, it is one of the most imposing churches in Ermoupoli. The richly decorated interior and its location in the district make it a memorable stop.
This historic seaside district is famous for the neoclassical mansions built by Syros's wealthy shipowners. The houses seem to overlook the water directly and offer splendid views of the sea.
Housed in former industrial buildings, the museum tells the island's manufacturing and commercial history through machinery, documents, and period objects. It is an interesting stop for discovering the city's industrious past.

How to get around
Ermoupoli is easy to explore on foot, but be prepared for hills, stairs, and uneven pavement, especially between the port, Ano Syros, and the hillside neighborhoods. Buses connect the town with several places on the island, including Galissas, Kini, and Finikas; frequencies and schedules may vary depending on the season. For the less-served beaches, you may want to consider a taxi or rental car, booking in advance during the summer months. The port is close to the center and within walking distance, although with luggage a taxi may be more convenient. Check the updated bus and ferry schedules, especially outside the high season.
When to go
Spring and early autumn are ideal for exploring Ermoupoli, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. From June to September the weather is warmer and the beaches are at their best, but July and August are the busiest months and require more attention to bookings. In the low season the atmosphere is calm, but some services and connections may be reduced. Before you travel, check the ferry schedules, as they may change depending on the time of year.
Where to eat
In the center of Ermoupoli you'll find tavernas, cafés, and restaurants, with a good selection of fish, home-style Greek dishes, and Cycladic cuisine. Specialties worth trying include San Michali cheese, loukoumia, and halvadopita, all typical of the island. For dinner at the most sought-after places in high season, it's advisable to book, especially on weekends. If you venture away from the busiest streets, you can find quieter spots, but always check opening hours.
