The largest and most famous of Suzhou's classical gardens, with pavilions, bridges, and pools of water harmoniously integrated into the landscape. It is recognized by UNESCO along with other historic gardens in the city.
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Suzhou is an elegant city in eastern China, renowned for its classical gardens, canals, and ancient cobblestone streets. Among temples, museums, and waterside views, it offers a captivating encounter between history, art, and everyday life.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
A refined historic garden known for its intimate courtyards, ornamental rocks, and traditional halls. Its different spaces unfold one after another, revealing ever-new views.
A historic scenic spot dominated by the leaning Yunyan Pagoda, often called the “Leaning Tower of Suzhou.” Paths and monuments tell the story of the city's ancient origins.
Designed by architect I. M. Pei, the museum blends contemporary forms with references to traditional local architecture. Its collections showcase the region's history and arts.
This historic canal-side street is ideal for strolling among small bridges, traditional houses, and shops. Cafés and small stores coexist with the quiet atmosphere of the neighborhood.
A famous Buddhist temple whose origins date back more than a thousand years, also made famous by classical Chinese poetry. Bells, pavilions, and courtyards make it a memorable stop.

How to get around
The metro is convenient for getting between the city’s main areas; to reach gardens and historic districts, it’s often useful to continue on foot or by taxi. Buses and taxis are widely available, while ride-hailing apps like DiDi can make getting around easier, especially if you enter the destination in Chinese. In old neighborhoods such as Pingjiang Road and Shantang Street, walking is the best way to explore the lanes and canals. Leave some extra time for traffic, especially during rush hour.
When to go
Spring and autumn, especially from April to May and from October to November, generally offer pleasant temperatures for visiting gardens and canals. Summer can be very hot, humid, and rainy, while winter is cold and sometimes damp. In spring the gardens are especially beautiful, but during Chinese public holidays and national vacation periods the attractions can get crowded: check the calendar and book ahead.
Where to eat
To sample the local cuisine, look for restaurants around Guanqian Street and in the historic districts of Pingjiang and Shantang; along the more touristy streets, compare menus and prices before you sit down. Local specialties include Suzhou noodles and squirrel-shaped mandarin fish, prepared in a sweet-and-sour sauce. The local cuisine often leans sweet: if you prefer less sugary flavors, ask the staff for advice or choose simple dishes. In the busiest restaurants, it can be helpful to show the dish name in Chinese.
Quick tips
- 01Download an offline map and save the addresses of the hotels and main attractions in Chinese.
- 02Check opening hours and booking arrangements for the most popular gardens in advance, as they may vary by season.
- 03Bring cash and a compatible digital payment method: some places mainly accept app-based payments.
- 04To enjoy the canals more peacefully, choose early morning or late afternoon and, if possible, avoid public holidays.
Wake up in the right place.
