Stockholm’s medieval heart is a tangle of cobbled lanes, historic squares, and colorful facades. Wandering through its streets is one of the best ways to soak up the city’s atmosphere.
One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Built on islands overlooking the Baltic Sea, Stockholm combines the charm of the old town with the energy of a modern capital. Between royal palaces, surprising museums, and sea views, every walk offers a different way to get to know the city.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
Vasa Museum
This museum houses the Vasa, a 17th-century warship recovered almost intact after sinking in the harbor. Its size and carved details make the visit unforgettable.
Founded in 1891, this open-air museum showcases historic buildings and traditional settings that tell the story of Swedish life in times gone by. It also has a zoo dedicated to Nordic wildlife.
Royal Palace
The Royal Palace dominates and is one of the official residences of the Swedish monarchy. With ceremonial halls and museums, it offers a journey through centuries of royal history.
Stockholm City Hall
The City Hall, famous for its brick tower and waterfront location, is one of the capital’s architectural symbols. It is here that the Nobel banquet is held after the awards ceremony.
An interactive museum dedicated to the famous Swedish band, with costumes, memorabilia, and music to rediscover. It’s an engaging stop even for anyone wanting to learn more about the history of Swedish pop.

The city takes shape.
Stop after stop.
A well-planned trip.
How to get around
The most convenient way to get around is by using SL’s public transport: metro, buses, trams, and some urban ferries. You can buy a single ticket or a multi-day pass through the SL app or with a contactless card at the gates and on enabled vehicles. The metro is efficient, and some stations are known for their artwork. In the historic center and between nearby districts, such as and Södermalm, walking is often the best choice. In summer, consider the ferries too for reaching the islands.
When to go
From June to August, the days are long, temperatures are generally mild, and the city comes alive with events and outdoor activities: it’s the ideal time to visit the archipelago, but also the busiest. Spring and early autumn offer fewer crowds and a pleasant atmosphere, with variable weather conditions. In winter it’s cold and daylight hours are short, but markets, museums, and cozy cafés make a visit especially atmospheric.
Where to eat
To sample Swedish cuisine, look for restaurants and bistros serving meatballs, herring, salmon, and seasonal dishes. In covered markets such as Östermalms Saluhall, you can find local specialties and casual meals; for a quick lunch there are also cafés and bakeries. Take a break for fika, the tradition of stopping for coffee and something sweet, often a cinnamon bun. For popular places, it’s best to book ahead, especially on weekends.
Quick tips
- 01Bring a payment card with you: in many places, payment is mainly by card or contactless.
- 02Check the forecast and dress in layers: the weather can change quickly, even in summer.
- 03Book museums, restaurants, and in-demand activities in advance during peak season.
- 04If you want to visit the islands, check ferry times and connections: frequency and service vary by season.
Live something worth telling.
