Astypalaia (Kalymnos, South Aegean, Greece) in 3 days – Complete itinerary

3 days / 2 nights · Villages, history, beaches, views

Astypalaia, also known as Astypalaia and part of the regional unit of Kalymnos, is best explored by alternating the historic core of Chora with stops by the sea. The first day is dedicated to the alleys, the castle, and nearby monuments; the second heads down toward the port of Pera Gialos and Livadi Beach. The third day explores the western bays of Kaminakia and Vatses, which take more time to reach. Distances and road conditions can affect the schedule: check access in advance, any boat connections, and official information on admission and services.

Day 1 – Chora and its monuments

10:00–18:00 Easy walks, with some uphill sections

Explore the historic center and the main panoramic viewpoints without going far from Chora.

10:00

Chora

Allow about 1 hour and 30 minutes for the whitewashed alleys, stairways, and passages between traditional houses, observing how the village unfolds along the hillside. Set off in comfortable shoes and plan short stops to photograph the harbor and the island’s silhouette. The walk is free; budget €3–8 for a coffee or soft drink.

In the morning, the light is ideal for photos and the climbs are less tiring than during the hottest hours.

11:45

Querini Castle

Walk to the castle in about 10–15 minutes, following the Chora’s stairways, and allow 45–60 minutes to explore the area and admire the view. Notice the walls and its commanding position above the village and the sea; the ground may be uneven. Admission may be free or cost an estimated €0–5: check official sources for any visiting arrangements and tickets.

Bring water and watch your step, especially if the ground is wet.

13:00

Panagia Portaitissa

Walk down to the church, a short distance from the castle, and allow about 30–45 minutes to visit the exterior and, if accessible, the interior. Leave time to take in the architecture and the setting of the complex without disturbing any religious services. The visit is generally free; an optional donation may be around €1–3. Check on site or through official sources for access conditions.

When entering a place of worship, choose respectful clothing and keep your voice low.

14:00

Windmills

Reach the windmills on foot in about 10 minutes and spend 20–30 minutes in the area to see the structures and the view over the village. The exterior visit is free; you may want to budget €3–8 for a drink nearby. After the stop, take a lunch break in the Chora: roughly €12–25 per person, depending on the venue and meal.

Spend the afternoon on a more relaxed walk or heading back to your accommodation, avoiding long extra transfers.

Day 2 – From the port to Livadi Beach

10:00–17:00 Relaxed, with short moves

Discovering the small harbor and spending part of the day on the nearby coast.

10:00

Pera Gialos

From the Chora, walk down in about 10–20 minutes, or take a taxi if you prefer to avoid the descent and the climb back up. Spend about 1 hour on the waterfront and at the harbor, watching the boats and the houses overlooking the bay; the stroll is free. A coffee or soft drink may cost roughly €3–8, while a simple meal often comes to around €12–25 per person.

If you’re planning a boat trip for another day, ask here for up-to-date information on routes, conditions, and fares.

12:00

Livadi Beach

Reach Livadi from Pera Gialos in about 10 minutes by car or taxi, or on foot in about 25–35 minutes depending on the route and the heat. Allow 3–4 hours for swimming and relaxing; bring water, sunscreen, and whatever you need, as available facilities may vary. Beach access is free; budget €5–15 for a drink or snack and check on-site for the cost of any services.

Wrap up the day by heading back to Chora or Pera Gialos: the uphill walk is more demanding, so consider a taxi or car.

Day 3 – The western bays: Kaminakia and Vatses

09:00–18:00 A long day, with demanding transfers

Visit two beaches on the west coast, planning access and travel times carefully.

09:00

Kaminakia Beach

Set off early from Chora: the drive can take about 40–60 minutes, but road conditions and surface may make it longer; get local advice before leaving and consider a suitable vehicle or a boat connection. Stop for 3–4 hours for swimming and a stroll along the bay, bringing water, food, and sun protection. Beach access is free; factor in about €15–40 per person for transport if you choose an organized service, and check availability and the fare in advance.

Do not tackle dirt roads or steep stretches without first checking the conditions and whether your vehicle is suitable.

14:00

Vatses Beach

Continue on to Vatses: the transfer from Kaminakia can take about 20–35 minutes on variable roads; check on site for the safest route, or consider a boat excursion that includes both bays. Spend 2–3 hours at the beach and in the sea, checking conditions before swimming. The stop is free; allow €5–15 for water and a snack, brought with you or bought depending on the services actually available.

Plan your return in advance and do not rely on services or connections unless you have confirmed them.
