The day alternates between the most emblematic monuments of ancient Sparta and two cultural stops in the modern center, keeping travel concentrated within the urban area. It begins with the statue of Leonidas and the archaeological site, then continues to the sanctuary of Artemis Orthia, just north of the center. After lunch, the Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil offers an interesting lens through which to understand the local landscape and economy; the day ends with Spartan art and cuisine. Museum hours, access, and admission fees may vary: it’s a good idea to check them before departure.

Discover the main remains of ancient Sparta and connect them to the culture and traditions of the modern city.
09:00
Statue of Leonidas
Start at the bronze statue of the Spartan king, in front of the stadium, one of the city’s modern landmarks. Set aside about 20–30 minutes for photos and orientation: the area is outdoors and the exterior visit is normally free.
The statue is easily reached on foot from the center; bring water, especially in the hot months.
09:40
Archaeological area of ancient Sparta
Walk to the archaeological area, where you’ll find remains of the ancient city and the acropolis area, set in an open landscape. Allow about 1–1.5 hours to explore at a relaxed pace and take in the surviving structures; access and any ticket requirement can change, so budget roughly €0–€10.
The ruins are less monumental than those of other Greek sites: a map or a short introductory read helps put them into context.
11:30
Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia
Continue north for about 2 km: the walk takes roughly 25–35 minutes, or just a few minutes by taxi, around €5–€10. On site, you can identify the remains of the sanctuary, an important religious center of ancient Sparta; set aside 30–45 minutes and check access arrangements and opening hours in advance.
The visit is outdoors and shade may be limited; bring a hat and water.
12:30
Lunch in central Sparta
Head back toward the center, on foot or by taxi, and stop at a taverna to sample Greek dishes and Peloponnesian specialties. Allow about an hour and expect to spend roughly €12–€25 per person, depending on the main course, drinks, and the type of place.
Ask for the dishes of the day: they’re often a great way to try homemade recipes.
14:30
Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil
Spend about 1–1.5 hours at this museum, which tells the story of olive cultivation and oil production from antiquity to the modern era. The rooms and exhibits help explain the connection between the Laconian region and the olive tree; budget roughly €4–€8 for admission, to be checked according to the current rate.
Check the calendar before you go: closing days and hours may vary with the season.
16:15
Koumantareios Art Gallery of Sparta
Head to the gallery in the city center for a visit of about 45–60 minutes to the works on display, which provide an artistic counterpoint to the archaeological morning. Admission may be free or subject to specific conditions: check opening times and any fee, roughly €0–€5.
If the gallery is closed, use the time for a walk through the center and a stop at a café.
19:00
Dinner and an evening walk in the center
End the day with a relaxed dinner at a taverna in the center, then wander along the main streets and the central square. Expect to spend around €15–€30 per person for dinner, depending on courses and drinks.
For a lighter meal, choose meze to share and ask whether seasonal local produce is available.
