3 days / 2 nights · History, mountains, river, archaeology
This itinerary combines the historical memory of Souli with the natural beauty of the Acheron, then ends amid archaeology and coastal landscapes. The first day is dedicated to the villages and monuments of the mountainous Souli region; the second follows the upper course of the river in the Glyki area. The third day focuses on the Nekromanteion and the estuary of Ammoudia, avoiding constantly switching between mountain and coast. A car is essential: the roads are scenic but winding, and opening hours and river activities vary by season.
Day 1 · Walking · 14.5 km · 200 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Get to know the landmark sites in the history of Souli, combining visits and walks in the same mountainous area.
09:00
Climb to Souli
Reach the area by car, allowing around 35–45 minutes from Paramythia and more time if you're coming from the coast. The road becomes narrow and winding in the final stretch: drive carefully and refuel before heading up. The transfer has no entrance fee; budget for fuel and parking where allowed.
10:00
Walk through the historic site of Souli
Spend about an hour taking in the landscape of the ancient settlement, observing the layout of the houses and the mountain views. Don’t expect an organized museum: this is mainly an open-air historic site, to be visited respectfully and without crossing fences or private property. Generally free access.
11:15
The mills of Souli
Walk to the remains of the mills, linked to the community’s daily life and water resources. Allow 30–45 minutes for the round trip, the stop and photos, with shoes suited to uneven ground. There is usually no admission fee.
12:15
Lunch and a break in the village
Stop for a simple lunch at a taverna in the area, or bring water and supplies with you, as services may be limited or seasonal. For a meal at a taverna, expect roughly €12–20 per person. Check opening times in advance, especially outside summer.
14:00
Kougi
Visit the hill of Kougi, tied to the Souliotes’ resistance and the memory of the events of 1803. Allow about 45–60 minutes for the climb and the stop: the path can be exposed to the sun and the ground is not always even. Access to the outdoor area is generally free.
16:00
Ruins of Kiafa Castle
Continue by car or on foot, depending on trail and parking conditions, toward the castle ruins and the surrounding viewpoints. Allow about an hour for exploration and views over the valley; there may not necessarily be facilities or complete signage. No standard ticket is required, but bring water and do not go near unstable walls.
18:00
Return and dinner in Paramythia or at your chosen base
Head back before dark, as the mountain road is poorly lit and requires attention. For dinner, allow around €15–25 per person, depending on the venue and dishes. Staying overnight in Paramythia or in the Glyki area lets you continue the next day without heading back toward the coast.
Explore the mountainous stretch of the Acheron and enjoy the springs without adding long transfers outside the Glyki area.
08:30
Transfer to Glyki
From Souli, allow about 45–60 minutes by car in general, checking the route and local conditions before setting off. Have breakfast and buy water and snacks in the village center: along the river, services may be seasonal. Budget roughly €5–10 for fuel for the transfer, varying according to the car and departure point.
09:30
Acheron Springs
Start at the springs and the most accessible stretch of the river, taking in the clear water and riverside vegetation. Spend about an hour walking and check on site for any signs about trails or organized activities. Access to the natural area is generally free; rentals and services, if available, have variable rates.
11:00
Walk along the river
Follow the pedestrian route along the Acheron for as long as the weather and trail conditions allow; for a short stretch, allow 1–2 hours in total. In some sections, the route may require walking in the water: do not attempt it in strong currents, storms, or with unsuitable footwear. Independent hiking is usually free.
13:00
Glyki Stone Bridge
Head to the stone bridge for a photo stop and to admire the relationship between the village and the river. The visit takes about 20–30 minutes and pairs easily with lunch in the village. A meal in a taverna costs roughly €12–20 per person.
14:30
Relax on the banks of the Acheron
Spend the early afternoon taking a break on the accessible riverbanks, respecting restricted areas and keeping passageways clear for river activities. In summer, some operators offer guided descents or rentals: expect roughly €10–30 per person, depending on duration and service, and check availability and safety on site. Avoid entering the water if the level is high or the current is strong.
17:00
Return to Glyki and break
Wrap up the active part of the day with a drink or a stop in the village, without planning a long excursion at the end of the day. For a drink or snack, allow about €3–8. If you are staying in Paramythia, factor in an additional car transfer.
18:30
Dinner and overnight stay
Dinner in Glyki or in the chosen base area; a full meal costs approximately €15–25 per person. If you’re planning a guided water activity the following morning, ask the operator about the latest return time and participation requirements. Overnight in a double room: approximately €60–120 per night, depending on the season and accommodation.
Combine the archaeological site of the Nekromanteion with the wetland landscapes of the estuary and Ammoudia beach.
09:00
Transfer to Mesopotamos
From Glyki, reach Mesopotamos and the Nekromanteion in about 45–60 minutes by car, depending on traffic and the route. Bring water and a hat with you: shade at the archaeological site can be limited. Budget approximately €5–10 for fuel for the transfer.
10:00
Nekromanteion of Acheron
Visit the ancient sanctuary traditionally associated with the cult of the dead and read the information panels to distinguish the archaeological remains from later interpretations. Allow about 60–90 minutes for the complex and the small museum, if open. Admission can vary, approximately €5–10; check opening hours, any closures, and updated prices before departure.
11:45
Stop in Mesopotamos
Pause in the village for a coffee and a short break before continuing to the coast. Allow 30–45 minutes and about €2–5 for a drink or snack. In the low season, some businesses may have reduced hours.
12:45
Acheron Delta
Reach the estuary area and take in the landscape of reeds, calm waters, and canals, different from the mountain gorges visited the day before. You can explore the accessible paths on foot or ask on site whether short boat trips are running. Access to the area is generally free; a boat trip can cost approximately €8–15 per person.
14:00
Lunch in Ammoudia
Head to the nearby village of Ammoudia for a lunch of fish or local dishes. Expect approximately €18–30 per person, depending on the menu and the restaurant. In summer, it’s best to arrive before peak hours and check availability.
15:30
Ammoudia Beach
Relax on the beach and swim only if sea conditions and local instructions allow it. Spend the afternoon resting after the walks of the first two days; services, umbrellas, and sun loungers may be seasonal and subject to a fee. For sun lounger rental, budget around €8–15, if available.
18:00
Evening stroll and return
Wrap up with a walk along the seafront or by the shore, then arrange your way back to your base or your departure. If you have a flight or a long transfer, leave plenty of time: inland roads take longer than distances suggest. A drink or an ice cream costs about €3–7.
