SOULI · ITINERARY

Souli (Thesprotia, Ipeiros, Greece) in 1 days – Complete itinerary

1 days / 0 nights · History, ruins, mountains, nature

The morning is devoted to the historic sites of Souli, gathered in a mountainous area where transfers are short but walks may take place over steep, uneven ground. You will visit the ancient settlement, Samonida, Kiafa Castle, and Kougi Hill, all linked to the history of the Souliotes. After a lunch break, the route continues by car down to the springs of the Acheron, with time for a walk along the river. The itinerary assumes you have your own car or a rental: winding roads and limited public transport make it impractical to get around without a vehicle.

Day 1

Historic Souli and the springs of the Acheron

09:00–19:00 Moderate walks and car transfers

Retrace the main places of Souliot history and end the day amid the river landscapes of the Acheron.

09:00

Souli: introduction to the historic landscape

Start in the area of ancient Souli, observing the layout of the settlements on the heights and the strategic position of the surrounding gorges. Allow about 45 minutes for the walk around: the remains are scattered and not always accompanied by explanatory panels. Access to the area is generally free, but it is advisable to wear shoes with grippy soles.

Reach the area with the tank already sufficiently full: services are few and far between.

10:00

Samonida and the traditional houses

Drive for a few minutes to Samonida, one of the villages associated with the history of the Souliotes. Stroll among the stone houses and observe the relationship between the settlement, the slopes and the access roads; allow about 45–60 minutes, without expecting a museum with regular opening hours. Visiting the exterior is normally free.

Respect private property and check on site whether any exhibition spaces are open.

11:15

Climb to the ruins of Kiafa Castle

Drive to Kiafa and continue on foot to the remains of the castle, keeping a careful pace: the ascent can be steep and the ground uneven. From above, you can appreciate the mountain outline and the visual control of the passage routes, central elements in understanding the defensive value of the place. Allow about 60–90 minutes in total; the area is outdoors and there is no admission fee.

In case of rain, strong wind, or intense heat, limit the climb and stop at the safest viewpoints.

13:00

Lunch in the Souli area

Stop at an available tavern along the road or nearby, checking opening hours and availability in advance: the offering may be seasonal. For a simple meal, budget roughly 15–25 € per person, drinks excluded or included depending on the place. After lunch, take a short break before heading down into the valley.

Bring water and a snack with you: you can’t count on businesses being open at every time of year.

14:30

Kougi, site of the Souliote memory

Make your way to Kougi hill, tied to the best-known episodes of Souliote resistance. Allow about an hour for the visit and the viewpoints, paying attention to elevation changes and stretches without barriers. Access to the outdoor area is generally free; services or guided tours are not guaranteed.

Check the light and ground conditions before moving away from the car.

16:00

Transfer to the springs of the Acheron

Drive down to the Acheron springs area, allowing about 40–55 minutes depending on the route and road conditions. The road is winding: drive carefully and consider a short stop if you need a break. Access to the natural area is usually free, while organized activities or services, when available, may have separate costs.

In spring and after heavy rain, ask locally about trail and river conditions.

17:00

Walk along the Acheron

Allow about 60–90 minutes for a leisurely walk in the accessible area around the springs, following the permitted paths and not entering the water if the current is strong. Take in the riparian vegetation and the contrast between the clear river course and the rocky walls. Simple walks are usually free; guided activities or rentals, if offered, have varying prices.

A change of shoes and a towel are useful if you plan to get near the wet sections.

18:30

Final stop and return

Wrap up with a short stop at an open refreshment spot in the area, if available, and start heading back before dark if you don’t know the roads. Allow about 30–45 minutes just to return toward the Paramythia area; the time increases if your destination is farther away. A drink or snack may cost roughly 3–8 €.

Phone coverage can be patchy: download the route map in advance.

Practical tips

  • Wear light trekking shoes: at Kiafa, Kougi, and the ruins of Souli the terrain can be steep, rocky, or slippery.
  • Bring water, sunscreen, and a windproof layer; in mountain villages, services and shops may be limited or closed out of season.
  • Before setting off, check road conditions, the weather, and access to the Acheron, especially after rain or during the low season.
  • Do not rely on public transport to connect the sites: plan the day with your own car or a rental and download offline maps.
