The Venetian fortress dominates the harbor and the old town, offering a striking view over the city. Its name derives from the Italian expression “Casa di arma”, referring to the guard’s barracks.

One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
Overlooking the Sea of Crete, Sitia is a welcoming, bright little town, ideal for exploring the far eastern end of the island. Between the harbor, traces of Minoan civilization, and beaches lined with palm trees, it offers an authentic and varied taste of Crete.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
The museum displays finds uncovered at archaeological sites in eastern Crete, including pottery and objects from the Minoan era. It is a useful stop for learning about the region’s long history before visiting the nearby ruins.
Just a short distance from the center are the remains of an important Minoan settlement, with traces of buildings and structures linked to urban life. Its elevated position also offers a lovely view over the Gulf of Sitia.
This fortified 15th-century monastery is one of Crete’s most famous religious complexes. Alongside its austere architecture, you can admire icons and sacred artworks.
Vai’s famous palm grove borders the beach with thousands of Cretan date palms, creating an unusual setting for the Mediterranean. It is an ideal destination for a day by the sea and a walk among the dunes.
A shaded trail crosses a gorge rich in vegetation and leads to a waterfall, then continues on to a secluded beach. The route offers a pleasant contrast to the arid landscapes typical of eastern Crete.

Getting around
Sitia’s center is compact and easy to explore on foot, especially between the harbor, the seafront, and the main streets. Buses connect the town with some locations on the island, but routes and frequencies can vary by season: check timetables before you set off. To explore beaches and archaeological sites in eastern Crete, a rental car offers greater freedom. Alternatively, you can use taxis and local transfers, which are best arranged in advance for farther destinations.
When to go
From May to June and from September to October, the weather is generally pleasant and there are fewer visitors than in peak season. July and August are the hottest and liveliest months, ideal for the sea but with high temperatures. In winter, the atmosphere is quieter, but some tourist services and activities may reduce their hours or close.
Where to eat
To sample Cretan cuisine, look for tavernas in the center and along the harbor: they often serve fish, daily specials, and dishes prepared with local olive oil. Flavors worth trying include dakos, Cretan cheeses, seasonal vegetables, and, at the end of the meal, a small glass of tsikoudia. Ask which products are fresh and in season, and keep in mind that mealtimes may be later than in Italy.
Quick tips

- 03Bring water, sunscreen, and a hat on hot days, especially during visits to beaches and archaeological sites.
- 04Check connections and flight availability to Sitia in advance: options may be limited and vary depending on the period.
