Part of the Metaxas defensive line, the fortress was the scene of fighting during the 1941 German invasion. The site includes exhibition spaces and preserves trenches and underground galleries.
Sidirokastro Castle
The castle ruins rise above Sidirokastro and offer fine views over the town and the valley of the Strymon River. The fortifications date back to the Byzantine era.
Agistro Thermal Baths
The thermal springs of the village of Agistro are known for their warm water and traditional stone baths. They make for a relaxing stop after an excursion in the surrounding mountains.
Monastery of Timios Prodromos in Akritochori

Getting around
Sintiki is a large area, and its points of interest are spread out: a car is the most convenient way to visit Sidirokastro, Lake Kerkini and Roupel Fort. The bus network connects some towns with Serres and other cities, but services can be infrequent and not always practical for reaching the attractions. If you are traveling without a car, check the schedules with the KTEL company and consider a taxi for local trips. On country roads, drive carefully and check the route in advance, especially if you are heading into rural or border areas.
When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal for exploring Lake Kerkini and the surrounding area, with generally milder temperatures and good opportunities for birdwatching. In summer, the heat can be intense, while winter is colder and some outdoor activities depend on weather conditions.
