Servia is a peaceful base for exploring the landscape of the artificial lake Polyfytos and some of the most interesting historic centers of Western Macedonia. The itinerary follows a geographic order: first the castle and Byzantine churches of Servia, then the lake and Velventos, followed by Kozani, Aiani and Siatista. A car makes it easy to handle the transfers comfortably, while visits to museums and archaeological sites should be planned by checking seasonal opening times. Costs are shown in euros and are approximate, excluding changes related to season and availability.
Day 1 · Walking · 1.6 km · 16 min · Source: Mapbox · walking
Discover the historic core of Servia and its main Byzantine monuments.
10:00
Orientation in the center of Servia
Spend the first hour getting your bearings in the town and organizing your walking visits. From the center, the churches and the route to the castle are close by, but the ground can be uneven; bring water and shoes with good grip.
Parking is generally easier on the streets outside the historic core.
11:00
Byzantine Church of Agios Dimitrios
Visit the building to appreciate its historical layout and architectural details, while respecting any religious services. Access may depend on opening hours or the presence of a caretaker; plan on a short visit with no cost, except for voluntary donations.
Bring a light covering for your shoulders and knees.
12:00
Churches of Agios Georgios and Agioi Theodoroi
Continue on foot between the two Byzantine churches, pausing to note the differences in structure and the relationship of the buildings to the old urban fabric. Allow about 30–45 minutes in total, leaving some margin in case they are closed.
Interior visits are not always guaranteed: check on site or ask in town.
13:00
Lunch in the center of Servia
Choose a local taverna for a simple meal, with meat dishes, legumes, or seasonal vegetables. A casual lunch may cost around €10–18 per person, drinks not included.
In small towns, some places observe an afternoon break.
16:00
Climb up to Servia Castle
Reach the castle area on foot by following the uphill path from the village: allow about 30–45 minutes to get there and at least an hour to explore the ruins and viewpoints at a relaxed pace. The area is outdoors and normally free of charge; avoid the route during the hottest hours.
After rain, the trail can be slippery.
18:00
Belvedere and return to town
End the day with a scenic stop and an unhurried walk back. The late-afternoon light enhances the landscape; bring a flashlight if you plan to head down after sunset.
Estimated dinner: €12–22 per person.
Explore the most accessible viewpoints over the lake and cross the large bridge over the reservoir.
09:30
Departure from Servia and stop by the lake
Drive to one of the accessible rest areas along the reservoir and spend a few minutes taking in the size of the artificial lake and the surrounding landscape. From Servia, the drives are short, but the shores are not equipped everywhere; park only in safe spaces.
There are no costs for the scenic stop.
10:30
Crossing the Polyfytos Bridge
Drive across the bridge, respecting the speed limits and without stopping on the roadway. For a calmer view, look for a legal stopping point nearby from which to admire the bridge and the reservoir; the road crossing is free.
Do not walk along the roadway: the bridge is a road infrastructure.
11:30
Views over Lake Polyfytos
Spend the rest of the morning making short scenic stops along the lakeshore, choosing accessible stretches according to the day's conditions. The visit is flexible and free; don't assume there are beach facilities or boat rentals.
In summer, bring sunscreen and water: shade is limited.
13:00
Lunch in the lake area
Stop at a tavern in the area or prepare a packed lunch bought in Servia. For a restaurant meal, budget around €12–20 per person; dining options can be spread out.
Check the opening hours of the restaurants, especially outside peak season.
15:00
Climb to Neraida
Drive to Neraida to admire the lake from above and stroll through the village streets. Allow about an hour and a half for the views and a break in the village; café drinks are roughly €3–7.
The road is winding: drive carefully and check the weather.
17:00
Return to Servia
Head back, making a photo stop only where it is safe to pull over. No tickets are needed for the day; the main cost is fuel, which should be estimated based on your chosen route and your car's consumption.

In the morning, you will often find a quieter atmosphere.
10:15

Stop by the tower and take note of its role as a city landmark before continuing on to the central streets. External viewing is free; access inside is not guaranteed and depends on opening times.
