Day 1

Medieval Servia and views over the valley

09:30–19:00 Moderate walks and a climb to the castle

Discover Servia’s town center and the main Byzantine remains without leaving the city.

09:30

Walk in Servia

Spend the morning in the center, taking in the shopping streets and views of the surrounding hills. It’s a convenient starting point to get your bearings before heading to the bridge; the visit is free.

Park in the center and wear shoes suitable for uphill streets.

10:30

Byzantine Bridge of Servia

Reach the bridge by car or with a walk of about 20–30 minutes from the center, depending on the route you choose. Stop to take in the stone structure and the Aliakmon Valley landscape; the exterior visit is free.

11:30

Ascent to the Castle of Servia

Head back toward the center and make your way up to the castle area, allowing about 30–45 minutes on foot for the round trip and visit, with steep sections. Among the ruins and viewpoints, you can see the town, the valley and, on clear days, the lake basin; exterior access is generally free.

In summer, bring water and consider making the climb during the cooler hours of the day.

13:00

Lunch in town

Return to Servia for lunch at a taverna and try regional dishes from Western Macedonia. Budget roughly €12–22 per person, depending on dishes and drinks.

15:00

Church of Agios Georgios, Servia

Make time for a stop at the church and the architectural and decorative details visible inside, if it is open. Admission is usually free; opening hours may depend on services and staff availability.

16:30

Return and scenic stroll

End the day with a leisurely walk through the town center and a coffee break. Allow about €2–5 for a drink; keep time in reserve for the trip back to the hotel and dinner.

Day 2 – Neraida, Lake Polyphyto and Velventos

09:00–19:30 Drive excursion with easy walks

Explore the eastern side of the lake and combine water views with the village and the Velventos gorge.

09:00

Departure for Neraida

Drive to Neraida from Servia in about 20–30 minutes, depending on your starting point and road conditions. The route climbs toward the village and offers progressively wider views over the lake; only the fuel cost needs to be considered.

09:45

Neraida Belvedere

Stroll through the village and stop at the scenic viewpoints overlooking Lake Polyphyto. Set aside about an hour for photos and a walking visit; there is no ticket required for the public areas.

11:00

Lake Polyphyto

Head down to the shore or choose an accessible scenic stop along the route, without venturing onto private land. The lake is a large artificial reservoir: factor in driving time between the different viewpoints and expect the stop at public areas to be free.

12:30

Transfer to Velventos and lunch

Continue by car to Velventos, allowing about 30–40 minutes of travel. Have lunch in the village and ask for seasonal local products; a simple meal can cost around €12–22 per person.

14:30

Walk around Velventos

Explore the village at a leisurely pace, taking in the streets of the center and the atmosphere of a place known for its agricultural tradition. Set aside about an hour for the visit; a self-guided walk does not require a ticket.

16:00

Velventos Gorge

Reach the gorge area by car and choose a short stretch suited to the day's conditions, without underestimating the terrain or elevation changes. Allow 1–2 hours for walking and stops; access to the natural area is generally free.

After rain, check on site whether the trails are passable and do not continue if the ground is slippery.

Day 3 – Ilarionas Dam and Zavorda Monastery

08:30–18:30 Day by car, with short visits

Get to know the Aliakmon landscape upstream from Servia and visit Zavorda only if access is permitted.

08:30

Departure from Servia

Leave early by car and check the route and road conditions to the dam and the monastery in advance. This day involves more driving than the previous ones: bring water, a snack, and enough fuel.

09:30

Ilarionas Dam

Stop at accessible and safe viewpoints to take in the dam and the Aliakmonas reservoir landscape. This is mainly a scenic visit and usually does not require a ticket; follow the signs and do not enter technical areas.

11:00

Transfer to Zavorda

Continue toward the monastery, allowing for slow driving on some local roads and checking the updated route. Actual travel time depends on traffic and road conditions: plan only a short stop along the way in safe, public areas.

12:30

Holy Monastery of Zavorda

If open to visitors, tour the complex with respectful attire and a quiet demeanor; ask at the entrance whether any areas are not accessible or whether services are in progress. Do not rely on regular opening hours: admission and any offering should be confirmed directly with the monastery.

Contact the monastery before you set off and do not photograph the interior without permission.

14:00

Lunch and a break on the way back

Arrange lunch in an open village along the return route, or bring a packed lunch if you cannot find an available place to eat. For a tavern meal, expect roughly €12–22 per person.

16:00

Return to Servia

Head back at a relaxed pace, stopping only at authorized rest areas to admire the valley. Travel time varies depending on the actual route and road conditions; leave some buffer before dinner.

  • Check church and monastery opening hours in advance: access may depend on services, available staff and local rules.
  • Bring shoes with good grip and water, especially for the climb to the castle and for the gorge trails.
  • In summer, plan climbs and walks during the cooler hours and always follow safety instructions at the lake and dam.
