Guide to Serifo
SERIFO · ITINERARY

Serifo (Milos, South Aegean, Greece) in 3 days – Complete itinerary

3 days / 2 nights · Sea, villages, mining history, walks

The itinerary starts from Livadi and Chora, then dedicates the first day to the beaches on the eastern coast, which are easy to combine with one another. The second explores the northern interior, between the Monastery of Taxiarches and the village of Panagia. The third day reaches the western coast to discover the mining landscape of Megalo Livadi and ends by the sea at Ganema. Distances are short, but the roads can be narrow and winding: having your own vehicle offers flexibility, while buses and taxis should be planned according to the season.

Day 1

Port, Chora and eastern beaches

10:00–20:30 Light walks and seaside stops

Getting your bearings in Livadi and Chora, then ending the day on the beaches of the east coast.

10:00

Livadi

Spend about an hour along the seafront and harbor, taking in the bay and the maritime connections that shape island life. If you arrive by ferry, you can start walking straight from the port; the stroll is free, while a break at a bar or a coffee will typically cost around 3–6 EUR.

Bring water and sunscreen with you: in the middle of the day, shade along the seafront can be limited.

11:45

Chora (Agios Athanasios Square)

Reach Chora in about 10–15 minutes by car or taxi; on foot, the climb from Livadi takes roughly 35–45 minutes. Allow 1–2 hours for Agios Athanasios square and the whitewashed alleys, being mindful of steep sections and uneven ground; the visit is free and transportation can cost around 2–6 EUR per person by bus or more by taxi.

Check on site or with the transport operator for the return trips to Livadi.

15:00

Agios Sostis

From Livadi, continue toward the eastern coast in about 10–15 minutes by car or scooter; for the visit, allow at least an hour, including the walk to the beach and the small chapel on the headland. Beach time and access are generally ticket-free, but budget 0–5 EUR for any local transport or parking, if applicable.

Bring water and suitable shoes for the trails; do not rely on beach facilities being available.

17:00

Psili Ammos Beach

From Agios Sostis you can reach the beach in about 5–10 minutes by car or with a walk of around 20–30 minutes, checking the route conditions in advance. Set aside 2–3 hours to swim and relax on the sandy bay; beach access is free, while drinks or a meal, if available, have varying prices and typically range from 5–15 EUR.

Return while there is still enough daylight and check transport options for the evening in advance.

Day 2 – Northern interior: monastery and Panagia

10:00–16:00 Cultural visits and leisurely walks

Explore the island’s inland landscape while respecting visit times and travel along winding roads.

10:00

Taxiarches Monastery

From Livadi, allow about 25–35 minutes by car or scooter, following local roads and driving carefully. Set aside 45–75 minutes for the religious building, architectural details, and surrounding landscape; any interior access, visiting arrangements, and possible offerings or fees should be checked on the official website or with local contacts.

Dress respectfully and check access conditions for the complex before departing.

12:30

Panagia village

Reach Panagia in about 10–15 minutes from the monastery and allow 1–2 hours to wander through the traditional houses and narrow lanes of the village, with photo stops and a lunch break. Visiting the village is free; budget roughly 12–25 EUR for a meal, depending on the place and your choice, and check any opening hours and tickets on the official website of the places you want to visit.

The slopes and cobblestone paving can make it useful to wear closed, comfortable shoes.

Day 3 – Western coast and mining heritage

10:00–18:30 Exploring by car and beach relaxation

Discovering the traces of Serifos’ mining activity and ending with a long stop on the western coast.

10:00

Megalo Livadi (Mining Site)

From Livadi, the drive by car or scooter takes roughly 25–35 minutes; the roads are winding, so leave time for stops and driving. Spend 1–2 hours taking in the historic industrial landscape and the structures visible from the outside, without entering buildings or inaccessible areas; the walk is free, while transport costs depend on the vehicle and any fuel.

Respect fences and signs: the mining structures may be unstable and not all of them can be visited.

13:30

Ganema Beach

From Megalo Livadi, reach Ganema in about 15–25 minutes by car or scooter, checking road conditions. Allow 2–3 hours to swim and relax on the bay; access to the beach is free, while any refreshments may cost roughly 5–15 EUR, without assuming that services are available.

Bring water, a snack, and everything you need for the beach; check the timetable or plan your return before stopping.

Practical tips

  • Check ferry connections, island transport, and return trips in advance, as they may vary by season.
  • To reach the less-served areas, consider a rental vehicle and factor in narrow, winding roads when planning travel times.
  • Bring water, a hat, and sunscreen; on some beaches, facilities may be limited or unavailable.
  • Before visiting, check the official website for any opening hours, access details, and tickets for monasteries and points of interest.
