At the top of the Chora, the castle overlooks the village and offers sweeping views of the sea and the island’s rooftops. Its fortifications hold centuries of history and can be reached by strolling through the narrow lanes.

One destination.
A thousand ways to live it.
In the heart of the Aegean, Skyros enchants with its hilltop Chora, quiet beaches, and a cultural identity rich in tradition. Between castles, museums, and traces of ancient civilizations, the island offers an evocative journey far from the hectic pace of everyday life.
Worth seeing, worth remembering.
This monastery, linked to the Byzantine tradition, stands beside the castle and looks out over the Chora. Its secluded setting offers a peaceful pause during a visit to the village.
The museum displays finds that tell the island’s long history, from prehistory to antiquity. It is a useful stop for gaining a better understanding of the archaeological sites and the civilizations that once inhabited Skyros.
Housed in a traditional house in the Chora, it preserves objects, costumes, and traces of everyday life in Skyros. A visit brings you closer to the local arts and customs.
On the island’s northeastern coast lie the remains of a Bronze Age settlement, among the most important in the northern Aegean. The site helps evoke Skyros’s ancient ties to maritime routes.
Near the Chora, this long sandy beach is one of the most convenient spots for a break by the sea. Its clear waters and view of the village make it a pleasant stop after sightseeing.

How to get around
The ferry to Skyros leaves from Kymi, on the eastern coast of Evia, and arrives at the port of Linaria; check the schedules in advance, as services can vary by season. To explore the island with more freedom, especially the beaches and villages outside the Chora, it is useful to rent a car or a scooter. In summer there are local connections, but frequency and routes may be limited. The road between Linaria and the Chora is paved, while for some coves and rural areas the final stretches can be narrow or unpaved. If you are traveling without a vehicle, plan your transfers around bus and taxi timetables.
When to go
From June to September the climate is ideal for the sea and most tourist services are open, but July and August are the busiest and hottest months. June and September often offer a good balance between beach days and greater peace and quiet. Spring is pleasant for walking and exploring the interior, even if the sea can be cool. In winter the island is much quieter and some connections and activities may be reduced.
Where to eat
In the Chora and in Linaria you will find tavernas and restaurants where you can sample Greek cuisine and local specialties. Look for dishes based on fish and seafood, kid or lamb, and local cheeses; lobster pasta is one of the best-known preparations, but availability depends on the catch and the season. For a casual meal, try mezedes to share and traditional sweets as well. In high season it is best to book at the most popular places and check opening times outside the summer months.
Quick tips
- 01Book the ferry from Kymi in advance and double-check the timetable shortly before departure.
- 02If you want to visit several beaches, consider renting a vehicle: public transport does not always cover every route.
- 03Bring suitable shoes for trails and coves, as well as sunscreen and water for excursions.
- 04In summer, book accommodation and restaurants in advance, especially during the busiest periods.
Wake up in the right place.
